Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, September 8, 2014 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral and Cremation Service in Yankton with Reverend Dani Jo Ninke officiating. Private family graveside services will be held at Garden of Memories Cemetery following the public funeral service. Elsie was born on the family farm northwest of Verdigre, Nebraska on February 8, 1921, the daughter of Vince and Ida (Belsky) Moticka. She was the youngest of six siblings, She grew up on the family farm and attended grade school at School District # 40 in Knox County thru the 8th grade. In 1935 she attended Verdigre High School and lived with the T.A. Tikalsky family who owned and operated the Queen Hotel in Verdigre. She worked at the hotel for her room and board while attending her four years of high school. She graduated in 1938 and moved back to the family farm. Elsie met her future husband, Frank Wirth of Verdel at a dance in Verdigre. They were united in marriage on February 26, 1941 in Hartington, Nebraska. They came to the old Gurneys (WNAX Station) to have their wedding pictures taken. They lived the next 4 years in the Pishelville area on the family farm with Frank's parents. There in a doctor's office, in Niobrara, the first two daughters Evelyn and Janice were born. In 1945 Frank and Elsie bought a farm in the Lesterville/Utica area in South Dakota where they spent the next 20 years farming and making their home. In 1946, their youngest daughter Joanne, was born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. Elsie was a true farmer's wife who helped Frank with all the chores and field work along with having a large garden. She always enjoyed spring with the baby chicks, goslings and ducklings. The smell of the soil being turned over was like a renewal and fresh start to each year. Hard work and long hours were an accepted normal. The family always took a two week vacation each year and eventually visited every National Park west of the Mississippi River and a visit one year to Niagara Falls. On Valentine's Day in 1964, the family farm was sold and Frank and Elsie moved to Yankton where they lived the rest of the lives. Frank kept busy doing carpentry work for many years while Elsie worked during the busy season at Gurneys Nursery and Seed, later working at Montgomery Ward as a sales clerk, and then at Dale Electronics for 10 years. During their retirement, they bought a camper and traveled the Alaskan Highway and toured through Alaska. Elsie never sat down to watch television at the end of the day without always crocheting or embroidery work. She crocheted countless doilies, tablecloths, and bedspreads during her lifetime. In her later years, she took up reading books and averaged reading 2-3 books a week. Elsie was able to remain in her own home until April 8, 2013, at the age of 92, when she entered Avera Sister James Nursing home. She is survived by her three daughters: Evelyn (Steve) Evans of Mitchell, South Dakota, Janice (Larry) Novak of Verdigre, Nebraska, and Joanne Berntson, of Yankton, South Dakota, along with 9 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Vince and Ida Moticka; her husband, Frank Wirth; her sister, Agnes Moticka; and four brothers; Albert (Irene) Moticka, Ted Moticka, Ernest Moticka and Vacie Moticka. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.
