Mrs. Floran is the sole remaining member of her own family. Husband's Family came in 1879 Mrs. Whiting was the last of the Whiting family that came to Kingsbury County in 1879 to take important parts in the settlement and building of it. Her husband, Louis E. Whiting, had come here with his father, Amos, and brothers Will E., Herbert and Rollie, Amos becoming the first superintendent of schools, Will the first county clerk. It was at their claim shanty east of De Smet that the meeting of organization of the county was held, February 18, 1880. Brought Here For Burial The body was brought to De Smet Tuesday by the son, Eugene Whiting, of Mandan, N. D. Funeral services had been held at Dickinson Monday evening. Services were held here Wednesday morning at 7 o'clock at the Congregational church and burial was made in the Whiting lot at the local cemetery. The Rev. J. M. Warkentin officiated at the services. E. M. Robinson was in charge of arrangements and Wm. Look, James Moody, W. M. Robinson, Wm. H. Warren, A. J. Ryland and F. W. Wright were pallbearers. Mrs. Harold Richardson played for the service. Mrs. Eugene Whiting and their twin daughters, Ruby [Ruth] Day and Louise Rae, accompanied the husband and father here. Attending the funeral also were Mrs. J. M. Sherwood, Mr. and Mrs. Frank G. Rollinger and Mrs. E. E. Skoug, who drove here early Wednesday morning and returned that afternoon. Mrs. Rollinger and Mrs. Skoug are nieces. Other nieces and nephews include their sister, Mrs. Charles Henry of Los Angeles, and brother Roy Sherwood of Sioux Falls, and Vincent Sherwood of New York City, Reginald Sherwood of St. Paul and Aubrey Sherwood of this city. Elsie Sherwood was born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Sherwood in Dane Co., Wis., June 20, 1857, the family moving soon to Trempealeau County to live near and in Whitehall. Coming to Dakota Territory a few weeks after her husband, Mrs. Whiting was here through the Hard Winter of 1880-81. Many years were spent on the homestead they took across the road from the Amos Whiting homestead. They left it to live on several rented farms of the vicinity until 1925, when death took the husband. A daughter, Inez, had died at eighteen. After her husband's death Mrs. Whiting went to visit Eugene at Dickinson, and remained after his moving to Mandan some years later. Without relatives there, she was contented, engaging in home nursing and housekeeping and in magazine subscription solicitation. Mrs. Whiting was interested in literary pursuit. For some years she contributed articles to farm papers, and to her death she kept up a large correspondence with relatives and friends over the entire country. She often wrote poems for some occasion here, and they were published in her brother's newspaper. De Smet News, De Smet, So. Dak.
