He bought 330 acres at $1.25 per acre, located 1 mile NE of Central City. He built a log cabin and some out-buildings. Later he built a large frame house and a barn. They had 7 children: Frank (1855), Flora (1857), Sarah (1859) George (1861), William (1864), Manly (1866) and Allica (1871). Elson died May 3, 1876. Some time later the farm was divided between their 4 living children, and Mary moved to Central City. She died in 1915.
