Description	:	COUNCIL GROVE — Elton "Bud" Susank, 84, longtime resident of Council Grove, died Sept. 3 at his residence, following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born July 29, 1925, to William and Dicia (Bradshaw) Susank, at their home in Susank. He graduated from Hoisington High School. He joined the United States Navy in November 1943. Read More	COUNCIL GROVE — Elton "Bud" Susank, 84, longtime resident of Council Grove, died Sept. 3 at his residence, following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born July 29, 1925, to William and Dicia (Bradshaw) Susank, at their home in Susank. He graduated from Hoisington High School. He joined the United States Navy in November 1943. He was on board a destroyer tender (repair ship), the USS Melville. He served in the European Theater and was honorably discharged in May 1946 as a 3rd Class Petty Officer. Bud married the love of his life, Juanita Pennington, on Aug. 31, 1948, in Las Vegas, N.M. He was a pumper in the oil fields and worked for Musgrove Petroleum, in Susank, then transferred to Council Grove in 1961. Musgrove sold to Abercrombie Drilling and later to Knighton Oil Company. He retired from the oil industry in 1990. After retirement, he was a self-employed backhoe operator. Mr. Susank was a member of American Legion Post 286, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7428, and a member of the Berean Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, drag racing and participating in car shows with his 1927 T-Roadster, which he built. He and Juanita enjoyed spending time with family. He taught several of his great-nieces and great-nephews to drive and loved every minute of it, as family was very important to him. Survivors include his wife, Juanita, of the home; sister, Marlene Boomhower and husband Gene of Dighton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Lucille Deberry. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Flint Hills Chapel, Council Grove. A graveside military service will be held at 3 p.m., at the Hoisington Cemetery in Hoisington. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care, American Legion Post 286 and/or VFW Post 7428 and may be mailed to Penwell-Gabel.
