Erford of Staplehurst were held at the Federated church in Seward at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, and were largely attended by neighbors and friends from both Staplehurst and Seward. Rev. Harry W. Hansen, the pastor, had charge of the services, assisted by Rev. F. G. Knauer, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Staplehurst. The remains were laid to their final rest in the family lot in Seward (north) cemetery. His son, Elton J. Erford of Tamora, his son-in-law, Frank Brokaw, and four grandsons, Herbert Armitage of Sidney, Elton Marsh Armitage and Ed Armitage of Dallas, Texas, and Tom Armitage of Omaha, acted as pallbearers. Mr. Erford was one of Seward county's most highly respected and wealthy citizens. His wealth, however, was not represented by lands, or stocks and bonds, or money, of which he may have been the temporary custodian, but in the esteem in which he was held by all who knew him. He was active in all church affairs, as well as in the affairs of his community, and his life was an inspiration and an example to the younger generation. He was a lover of outdoor sports, and obtained his recreation this way. Obituary Elton J. Erford was born at Peoria, Ill., September 28, 1859, and died July 11, 1929, at his home at Staplehurst, Nebr., aged 69 years, 9 months and 13 days. He was the youngest of a family of five children born to Henry and Catherine Erford, all of whom have preceded him in death. At the age of 17 he united with the Presbyterian church, of which he was an active and devoted member continuously until the day of his death. On August 15, 1880, he was united in marriage to Lillie B. Lowry. To this union six children were born, three of whom have passed on. He is survived by his wife and three children, as follows: Mrs. Nelson Armiitage of Torrington, Wyo., Mrs. June Brokaw of Milford, and Elton J. Jr., of Tamora. Besides these he leaves nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of friends and admirers of his benevolent spirit and staunch Crhistian character. In March, 1882, Mr. Erford came to Seward, where he lived until October, 1889, when he went to Ogden, Utah. He returned to Seward during the summer of 1890, and removed to Staplehurst to enter the lumber business in March, 1891. His last illness dates back to July 3, 1928, since which time he has suffered several physical reverses. A fall May 22, 1929, necessitated a major operation, from which he was apparently recovering until June 21when he suffered a relapse from which he gradually succumbed.
