Elva was born April 6, 1911, on a farm at Buffalo County, Nebraska, to Ross and Pansy (Lossee) Winslow. She graduated from Overton High School in 1927. On March 30, 1931, she married Ray LeMaster at Kearney, Nebraska; the couple made their home at several places in Buffalo County before moving to Elm Creek in the 1940's. Mr. LeMaster preceded Elva in death in 1946. Following her husband's death, Elva began work with the telephone company in Elm Creek as an operator. She later lived in Elwood, where she served as the chief telephone operator, and then transferred to Kearney. Following her time in Kearney, Elva lived in Holdrege, Nebraska, and on May 22, 1959, she married Gaylord Miles at Holdrege. Elva retired from the phone company in 1959, following her marriage to Gaylord. The couple made their home in Elwood where they lived the rest of their married lives. Mr. Miles preceded Elva in death in 1983. Elva was a long time member of the Christian Church in Elwood. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and growing flowers and vegetables in her garden. She was an avid card player. In addition to her husbands, Elva was preceded in death by two sons, Bob and Gene LeMaster; daughter, Lois Jorges; son-in-law, Ted Jorges; step-son, Larry Miles; two brothers, Warren and Marshall Winslow; and two sisters, Effie Simhiser and Esther Potter. Survivors include her son, Lyle (Jane) LeMaster of Wichita, Kansas; sister, Ethel Tool of Elm Creek, Nebraska; two step-daughters, Shirley (Bill) Umberger of Omaha, Nebraska and Gloria MacEwen of New Mexico; one step daughter-in-law, Arlene Miles of Lexington, Nebraska; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held Thursday, April 9, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Christian Church in Elwood with Pastor Linda Newman officiating. Burial was in the Elm Creek Cemetery at 3 p.m. following the services. Memorials are suggested to the Elwood Christian Church, Elwood Senior Center or the Elwood Care Center in her memory. Condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com.
