(November 15, 1913 ~ Nov. 27, 2004) 15 November 1913 – 27 November 2004 ~✿~ Elva Pauline Underwood, 91, of Parsons died at 10:56 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Labette County Medical Center, where she had been a patient since Nov. 14. She had resided at Elmhaven West nursing home for the past several months. She had resided at Woodridge Estates for the previous two years. She was born Nov. 15, 1913, in rural Cherokee County to Alva and Katie (Nolan) Hale. She spent her childhood years in the McCune and Hallowell areas. She married Horace Westervelt on Sept. 1, 1935, in Walla Walla, Wash. They made their home in McCune from 1937 until 1942, when they moved to Parsons. They were active members of the Queen City Campers and traveled with that group for many years. He preceded her in death on July 19, 1976. She married Joseph M. Underwood on Aug. 11, 1979, in Parsons. They made their home at 305 N. 31st. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1985. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Parsons and its Amoma Sunday school class. Survivors are seven nephews and nieces, Robert Hale of Trimble, Mo., Marilyn Westervelt of Columbus, Marvin Huff of Corpus Christi, Texas, Dorothy Burris of Topeka, Doyle Huff and Keith Huff of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Gayle Huff of Parsons; one stepson, John Underwood of Savannah, Ga.; and one stepdaughter, Myrna Berends of Henderson, Nev. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim Hale and Maurice Hale; and one sister, Lucille Huff. The service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Mason officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Friends Cemetery south of McCune. Friends may call at their convenience at the funeral home. Memorials to First Baptist Church of Parsons may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, Box 942, Parsons.
