Elvera Jeanette Sandell was born on April 10, 1916 to Helge and Hilda (Braley) Sandell on the family farm in Lynn Township, Day County, South Dakota northwest of Webster. She was baptized at the family home and later confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bristol. When she was a year old the family moved to a farm in Kidder Township east of Bristol where she began country school. A year later they moved to another farm northeast of Bristol where she finished eighth grade at country school district 114. She was needed at home to help with the farm work. Later she worked for different families and was also a clerk at Gustafson Store in Bristol and the National Tea Red and White store in Webster. On June 30, 1945 she was united in marriage to Lloyd Berg at American Lutheran Church in Webster. After their marriage the couple moved to the Berg family farm in Butler Township which they later bought. They lived there for twenty five years. While living on the farm, Elvera, Lloyd and their daughter, Janis worked with cattle and helped Elvera’s brother, Vernon haul grain. In 1970 Elvera and Janis moved to Clark where she worked at the Potato plant and also in Watertown at Conifer Nursery. In 1975 she moved to Webster. She entered Bethesda Home in Webster in September 2013. She was a member of Rachel Circle at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bristol. She also was a member of Helping Hands Club of Holmquist and a bowling team at Bristol. She helped her daughter at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster with Lutheran World Relief quilt activities. He enjoyed family gatherings, bus trips and James Valley Threshing Shows. Elvera passed away peacefully at Webster, South Dakota on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at the age of 100 years, 7 months and 3 days. Survivors include one daughter, Janis Berg of Webster; one sister, Ethel Gustafson of Minneapolis,MN; a brother-in-law, Herb Horter of Bristol, SD; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, Vivian Horter and two brothers, Vernon and Marvin Sandell. - Fiksdal Funeral Home
