Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner is in charge of the arrangements. Elvern passed away on Friday, July 17, 2015 at his home with family by his side. Elvern Dean Rathke was born on July 3, 1933 at home in rural Beemer, NE to Otto and Helena (Wendt) Rathke. He was baptized in July of 1933 and later confirmed on March 1947 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Beemer, NE. Elvern attended St. John’s Parochial School, graduated from Wisner High School in 1951 and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE. He and his brother operated Rathke Bros. hog Farm after college. Elvern served in the United States Army from 1955-1957 and while stationed in Chinon, France, he played football, basketball and baseball for Company A Unit. Upon being honorably discharged he was employed by the Blumer Mink Ranch. On January 18, 1959, he was united in marriage to Marion Toelle at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Beemer, NE. Elvern helped build, then was employed and later managed the Wisner Farmer’s Elevator for over 50 years. Elvern served the Wisner community in various forms, whether it was serving on the Wisner City Council for 20 years, the Wisner-Pilger School Board for 7 years, announcing football games for Wisner-Pilger Home games, umpiring softball in the Beemer League or baseball in the Dodge Co. League for 25 years and Wisner Junior and Senior Legion games, getting the Wisner Legion ball field ready, and serving on the Wisner Volunteer Fire Department. Elvern was recently inducted into Lutheran High Northeast’s Eagle Hall of Faith for his tireless volunteer efforts. Elvern was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he held many offices and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He enjoyed gardening and tending his hard and self-built bank of beautiful flowers. Elvern enjoyed fishing, hunting, attending Husker football games and following the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved to go and watch his children and grandchildren participate in their sporting events and activities and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include- Wife- Marion Rathke of Wisner, NE Children and their families- Carrie and Terry Bohnenkamp of Parker, CO and family-Brenan and Brittainy Oliver and daughter Shyden, Brittany and Elliott Hay and children Riley, Maddox and Gracelyn, and Ryan Bohnenkamp Christie and Dan Taege of Lincoln, NE and family-Emily Taege and Jordan Kuhl and children Oliver Taege and Calvin Kuhl, and Taylor Taege Ryan and Karen Rathke of Grand Island, NE and family- Garrett Rathke, Jenna Rathke, Jordan Rathke, and Hannah Rathke Greg and LeAnn Rathke of Norfolk, NE and family- Arrin Rathke, Arianna Rathke, and Aubrey Rathke Beckie Rathke of Norfolk, NE Brother-Alan and Mary Rathke of Fredricksburg, VA Sister-Doreen Leffler of West Point, NE Sister-in-law-Marilyn Rathke of Columbus, NE Friends close to Elvern’s heart- Jeff and Tami Rabe and family of Wisner, NE and Carol and Chris Moravec and family of Lincoln, NE Elvern was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-Ruben, Leon, and Norman as a child, and sister-Palma Greenwald."
