Dawson farm, nine miles northwest of Hawarden, was found dead in the grove on the farm about 5:30 last Friday afternoon. A charge in the neck from a shot gun which lay at his side indicated that his death had been instantaneous. Members of his family express the belief that his death was purely accidental. A bull had jumped the pasture fence and it is believed that Mr. Henderson secured the gun before attempting to drive the bull back into the pasture and that as he entered the grove between the house and the pasture he must have tripped and fell on some limbs, causing the gun to be discharged. Mrs. Henderson and her daughter, Mrs. Marie Hagen, had spent the afternoon with a neighbor and when they returned about 5:30 they surmised that something was wrong when they discovered that the horses were still in the barn. A search was made and the body of Mr. Henderson was found in the grove, which was close to the highway where anyone driving along might have seen the body if they had happened to look in that direction. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in this city at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Robt. H. Forrester in charge. Members of the Odd Fellows lodge of Alcester had charge of the services at the grave. Members of the local Rebekah lodge, of which Mr. Henderson was a member, and the local Odd Fellows lodge attended the services in a body. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. Elvie Henderson was the third son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac N. Henderson. He was born at Nashville, Iowa, Sept. 29, 1879, and passed away Sept. 9, 1932, and so was almost 53 years of age. His early boyhood was spent in Iowa but when he was twelve years of age he moved with his parents to Pender, Neb. Later the family moved to the vicinity of Ireton; He was united in marriage with Mary E. Baker Sept. 25, 1901, and following their marriage they lived on a farm east of Hawarden. In 1905 they moved onto a claim in Colorado where they resided for five years, returning to Hawarden in 1910. For a time he operated a dray line in Hawarden and later he moved onto a farm northwest of Hawarden. But for the past ten years he resided on a farm near Alcester. He was a member of the Methodist church and of the I. O. O. F. lodge. He was the father of four children, one of whom died in infancy. He is survived by the widow and three children, Hugh C. Henderson of Nogales, Ariz., and Mrs. Marie Hagen and Miss Iva at home. He also leaves seven brothers, Chas. H. of Spokane, Wash.; John of Alvin, Texas; Rex and Denton of Monmouth, Colo.; Ralph H. of Montevideo, Minn.; Roy of St. Croix Falls, Wis., and Glenn of Longmont, Colo.; and three sisters, Mrs. Edith Hendricks of Boulder, Colo.; Mrs. Ruth French of Longmont, Colo.; and Mrs. Etta Arbuthnot of Colorado, and four grandchildren, Cleo Ray, Mary Lou and Elvie Henderson and Donald Duane Hagen. The deceased was widely known in this section as an upright, hard working citizen. He was of a genial disposition and readily made and held friends. He was a faithful husband, a kind and indulgent father, a splendid neighbor and a loyal friend. A wide circle of friends in this community extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family at his tragic death. Relatives from a distance who at attended the funeral were Ralph Henderson of Montevideo MN; Dr. and Mrs. C. L. Roland of Humboldt SD; Mrs. Joe Sporrer, Mr. W. H. Herman and Mrs. Bert Luchsinger and daughters, Lavon and Lois of Huron SD; Arther Baker of Forestburg SD and Mr. and Mrs. Claud Quick and Joseph Quick of Gayville SD.
