Elvin passed away Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen. Elvin was born March 9, 1922, to Friedrich and Bertha (Wacker) Feickert on the family farm, rural Long Lake, S.D. He was the youngest of six children. He attended Hoffman Hilltop School through the eighth grade and he was recognized for scholastic achievement for all of McPherson County. He helped his parents on the farm, sheared and herded sheep and helped on threshing crews and trapped. He rode horse to neighbors and relatives to socialize. He dug numerous graves by hand for relatives. As a young man, he helped his parents and eventually took over the family farm. On June 20, 1946, he married Christina Geffre at Leola, S.D. They raised seven children. Elvin's hard work ethic, honesty and love of people was a great example for his whole family. He milked cows for over 20 years and always enjoyed his stock cow heard. Elvin was one of the first farms in the area to have a mechanized loader and other modern farm equipment. His greatest joy was his public service. He was a Hoffman Township supervisor and Hoffman Hilltop School Board member; he was on the soil conservation board; a McPherson County commissioner from 1963 to 1977; McPherson County highway superintendent from 1978-1984; school board member for Leola School District. He was a supporter of the 4th Planning District, which is now Northeast Council of Governments, Northeast Mental Health, the South Dakota Association of County Commissioners and served on committees and attended many meetings to help the organization. He received the State Range Land Manager of the Year Award in 1983. He was interested in soil conservation and was a great steward of the land. He was a driving force in helping establish McPherson County as having one of the best rural road systems in the state. His public service gained him many friends. They moved off the farm in August 1979 and into Leola, where he continued his public service. After his retirement, he helped his family and stayed active on the farm and did some traveling. In 1993, they moved to Aberdeen, where he was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed talking with everyone. He was a kind and caring man and would always be sure to give more than he received. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Edmund, Emil and Emanuel; and two sisters: Amelia and Freda. He will be missed by his wife, Christina, and children: David (Sonia), Dennis (Rae), Roger (Cathy), Peter (Tracey), all of Aberdeen, Philip (Pam) of Elkhorn, Neb., Joyce (Marvin Kirchler) of Tucson, Ariz., and Sidney (Launa) of Long Lake; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, who mourn his passing.
