Quaife of the Iowa State College agricultural extension service were honored at a banquet here Thursday night as two men who have led in the development of Iowa's beef and pork-producing industries for 40 years. Sixty Iowa county beef and swing producers' associations, 27 commercial firms connected with the livestock industry and 264 individuals joined with nine national livestock associations in subscribing a fund to commemorate and extend the beef and swing improvement work Beresford and Quaife have done. Beresford retires this year and Quaife will continue to serve on a 9-month basis for two years. At the banquet oil portraits of the two men were presented, to hang in the college's main agriculture building, Curtiss Hall. Additional funds contributed by organizations, business firms and individuals were set aside for a permanent Beresford-Quaife recognition award, to be presented on alternate years to an Iowa vocational agriculture instructor and a county agricultural extension director. Ames Daily Tribune. Ames, Iowa. 13 May 1972, Sat. Elvin Lee Quaife, 84, 1218 N. Third St., a former extension livestock specialist at Iowa State University, died Friday. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday from the United Church of Christ Congregational. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Quaife was born Nov. 29, 1887, on a farm near Ionia. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1911 and became an instructor of animal husbandry at the Massachusetts Agricultural College, Amherst, Mass. In 1913 he married Helen A. Marshall. He returned to Ames in 1917 to accept a position at Iowa Sate as an extension livestock specialist. Mr. Quaife helped design a farrowing crate in 1951 which revolutionized swine management Practices. He has judged all classes of livestock at county and state fairs and at his retirement, was credited with having judged at more county fairs and shows than any other living person. At his retirement, he was honored by the Washington County swine producers and the agricultural section of the Des Moines Chamber of Commerce for 40 years of service to agriculture. He was a member of the Congregational Church, Masonic Lodge, Lions Club, Cyclone Club and the Isaac Walton League. Since 1925 he has served continuously as a school, city, state and general election judge. Survivors include his wife Helen; four daughters; Mrs. C.J.Fribley, 1205 Third St.; Mrs. Richard T. Caine, Monett, Mo.; Mrs. N.W. McBeath, Akron, Ohio and Mrs. G.M.Cox, Fayetteville, N.C.; a son, Kenneth, Los Vegas, Nev.; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Friends may call Sunday until noon Monday at Adams Funeral Home.
