She was born Jan. 5, 1918, in Hooper to Clinton and Myrtle (Beahr) Strong. She grew up in Hooper. She was the oldest of her family, and at the age of 14, her mother died in 1932. Heller, 91, of Oakland, formerly of Fremont, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, at Oakland Heights. She was born Jan. 5, 1918, in Hooper to Clinton and Myrtle (Beahr) Strong. She grew up in Hooper. She was the oldest of her family, and at the age of 14, her mother died in 1932. She quit school in the ninth grade and stayed home and raised her five brothers and two sisters. Elvira Strong married LaVere Heller on Nov. 23, 1938, in Lincoln. LaVere died April 24, 1976. The couple had a daughter, Rosemary Jo, and they also raised Elvira's nephew, John E. Strong, from the age of 2 after his parents died in 1950 in a house fire. Elvira lived in Hooper and then moved to Lincoln for a short time before moving to Fremont in the mid 1940s. She had been residing at Oakland since November 2006. Elvira was a member of First Lutheran Church in Fremont. She did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels and the Low Income Ministry in Fremont. Survivors include: a daughter, Rosemary Jo (and husband, Merlin) Anderson of Oakland; a sister, Loretta Iverson of Fremont; half brothers, Larry (and wife, Melissa) Strong and Jim (and wife, Gloria) Strong, all of Fremont; half sisters, Judy Goad, Dana (and husband, Ron) Sidorski and Susan (and husband, Paul) Ortega, all of Washington state; grandchildren, Keith (and wife, Brenda) Anderson of Oakland, Kevin (and wife, Kara) Anderson of Lyons and Brenda Jo (and husband, Scott) Henning of Lincoln; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Edith Strong of Fremont; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Bernice Strong; five brothers, Joseph, Harry, John, G. Clifford and C. Richard Strong; a sister, Delorise Arp; and a nephew, John Strong. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Fremont with the Rev. Charles Axness officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. today. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. Memorials have been established to First Lutheran Church and Oakland Heights.
