Funeral Services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Northside Baptist Church, Orangeburg, SC, with Doctor Shane Stutzman, Doctor Ben Davis and Reverend Jim Parnell officiating. Pallbearers will be Phil Lackey, Jay Lackey, Chase Allen, Randy McManus, Charles Brown, Cecil Williams, Jim Arant, and David Bair. Burial will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 19, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home. Friends may also call at the residence of Wes and Karen Connelly, 1364 Providence Road, Orangeburg, SC. Mr. Lackey was born on March 31, 1912, in Paxville, SC, the son of the late Joshua Preston Lackey and Rosa Barwick Lackey. After the premature death of his father, he and two siblings were reared at Connie Maxwell Children's Home in Greenwood, SC, while his mother cared for his three younger siblings. He was a 1931 graduate of Greenwood High School. After working as a linotype operator and serving in the CCCs, he opened his first photographic studio for Mr. D. E. Williams in Orangeburg in 1935. This began his love for the City of Orangeburg and his second love affair was with Mildred Thompson, a sales clerk at Fersner's 5 & 10 Cents Store. They were married in 1939 and this union lasted for 67 years, until her death in 2006. After marriage, they were partners in Lackey's Studio for many years. During their careers, they photographed more than three generations of family portraits and weddings. He answered the call to serve his country during World War II. He was assigned to the Signal Corps of the United States Army, serving in the South Pacific. Mr. Lackey was a long time active member of Northside Baptist Church, serving in many capacities, including teaching Sunday school in excess of 65 years. He was also a member of the Gideons International. Connie Maxwell Children's Home was the recipient of his admiration and support having served on the Board of Trustees and as a Trustee Emeritus for many years. He is survived by his son, E. Shelton Lackey and his wife Martha; his grandchildren, Dr. Karen L. Connelly (Wes), David M. Lackey (Jenn), and Richard E. Lackey; his great-grandchildren, Carlin and Reeves Connelly. He is also survived by his siblings Myrtle A. Lackey of Sumter, Blondine L. Still of Hanahan, and J. P. Lackey of Greenville. He was predeceased by his brothers, Huggins M. Lackey and Winfred B. Lackey; and his sisters, Doris L. Copeland and Eulalie L. Hughes. Elwood's home for the past 4 years was Longwood Plantation. He enjoyed all phases of his life there.
