He was 73. Mr. Haynes was the grandson and namesake of Elwood Haynes, who invented America's first practical gasoline-powered automobile in 1894. The buggy was called the Pioneer. He also invented stainless steel and the super-alloy 'Stellite'. Mr. Haynes was born and raised in Kokomo, Ind., in a house that is now the Elwood Haynes Museum. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in Indiana before coming west to Stanford University. After graduating in 1951, he married Stanford classmate Patricia Scherrer. He served in the Army and then moved to Atherton, where he lived for 20 years. He operated Haynes Corp., an investment management company, and Premiere Travel, with offices in San Francisco and Menlo Park. After raising four children and then getting divorced, he married Suzanne Kuechler in 1983. For 20 years they lived in a graceful old co-op at the end of Green Street, on Russian Hill, and were active in San Francisco society, as patrons of the San Francisco Symphony and the Opera. An exceptionally kind, humble and generous man, "Woody," as he was known, was an enthusiast for amateur athletics. For 45 years he had six season tickets on the 50-yard-line at Stanford Stadium and was a contributor to the Buck/Cardinal Club. On weekends when Stanford wasn't playing, Mr. and Mrs. Haynes flew to New York to attend Army games. Though Mr. Haynes had no affiliation with the U.S. Military Academy, he thought it the last bastion of true amateurism and supported it financially. Often driving up alone from the Regency Hotel in New York City, he always wore a coat and tie and got there to attend the pregame Parade of Cadets. He hosted a family reunion every July at the Mauna Kea Resort on the Kona Coast of Hawaii, and at the Indianapolis 500 auto race, where he had a box on the first turn. He actively managed a 500-acre farm where he grew corn and soybeans in Tipton, Ind. When in San Francisco, he maintained an office on Montgomery Street, where he went every day until he became ill last December. Mr. Haynes played tennis and golf and was a member of the Pacific Union Club, San Francisco Golf Club, Menlo Country Club, Menlo Circus Club and the Columbia Club of Indianapolis. He was a lover of the operas of Wagner, Strauss and Puccini, and a student of military history, with an extensive home library. Survivors include his wife, Suzanne; two sons, Elwood March Haynes Jr. of San Francisco and Richard Stephen Haynes of Palos Verdes (Los Angeles County); two daughters, Marsha Haynes Hannay of Atherton and Deborah Haynes Ramsden of Seattle; stepchildren Henry Kuechler IV of San Francisco and Mary Kuechler of Menlo Park; and seven grandchildren. He will be buried at the Haynes family plot in Kokomo. The family requests donations be made in his name to the California Pacific Medical Center Foundation, P.O.
