"El" Hershberger, 89, Milford, was born June 4, 1925 to Jerry and Sarah (Erb) Hershberger on the family farm near Milford and passed away on his birthday, June 4, 2014, at Tabitha in Lincoln. He attended Milford High School prior to serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. El was a member of the 97th Infantry Division in the European and Pacific theatres. "El" Hershberger, 89, Milford, was born June 4, 1925 to Jerry and Sarah (Erb) Hershberger on the family farm near Milford and passed away on his birthday, June 4, 2014, at Tabitha in Lincoln. He attended Milford High School prior to serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. El was a member of the 97th Infantry Division in the European and Pacific theatres. He loved working on cars and enrolled in on-the-job training to become an auto mechanic which he enjoyed as his profession for 42 years. El married Gwen Friedli of Milford on April 24, 1949. During their 65 years of marriage the family grew to include two sons, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. El enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren at school events, sports activities and church events. He was very proud of their spiritual growth. Raising and showing Quarter Horses was a lifelong passion. He helped form the Trails and Rails 4-H Horse Club in Milford and truly enjoyed working with youth as they showed their horses. He also was actively involved with many church youth groups throughout his lifetime. El was an active member of Christ's Place Church in Lincoln and was also a member of American Legion Post #171 and served on the Milford Volunteer Fire Department for 23 years. El loved the Lord with all his heart and soul. We have the assurance his faith has him spending eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is survived by his wife, Gwen, Milford; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Barbi, Tom and Deb, all of Lincoln; grandchildren and spouses, Dustin and Breann, Kearney, James and Melissa, Lincoln, Daniel and Laura, Bellevue, Kyle and Jessie, Lincoln, Kelly and Casey Nuss, Lafayette, Ind.; nine great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Maynard and Wanda Hershberger, Lincoln. El was preceded in death by parents, Jerry and Sarah; sisters, Ollie Roth, Fern Potter and Mary Ann Luebbe; brothers, Vernon and Sterling.
