Description	:	Elza Armstrong Reeves was born in Meigs Co, OH and on Aug 31, 1845, he married Susan J Irwin. To this union five children were born: Samuel, Hugh, Josiah, Phoebe and Clara. In 1845, Elza and Susan left Ohio and headed for what was then the Far West, stopping in Knox Co, IL. They continued to Fremont County with a wagon train of seven or eight oxen teams. Read More	Elza Armstrong Reeves was born in Meigs Co, OH and on Aug 31, 1845, he married Susan J Irwin. To this union five children were born: Samuel, Hugh, Josiah, Phoebe and Clara. In 1845, Elza and Susan left Ohio and headed for what was then the Far West, stopping in Knox Co, IL. They continued to Fremont County with a wagon train of seven or eight oxen teams. After arriving in Fremont Co, Elza built a log cabin about 4 1/2 miles north of Sidney and became a successful farmer. Elza Reeves was 34 when he enlisted as a Private in Co. A of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Aug 26, 1861. He was mustered in on Nov 23, 1861. He re-enlisted on Dec 12, 1863, and mustered out of the service with his company on Aug 8, 1865. He was promoted to 8th Corporal on Jan 1, 1865; to 7th Corporal on March 1, 1865; and to 6th Corporal on June 1, 1865. He fell wounded at the Battle of Columbus, Georgia, on April 14, 1865; an engagement in which the 4th IA Cavalry suffered a loss of two killed and nine wounded. The enemy lost 1500 men killed, wounded or captured. He recovered from his injuries and remained with his company until honorably discharged. Elza died at his home in Sidney at the age of 82 years 7 months 5 days. He died after an illness of about a month from a complication of diseases. Six of his war comrades were pallbearers at his funeral: Joseph Wilson of Sidney, H.R. Laird of Tabor, Asa Mann and Smith Crane of Hamburg, Charles Smith of Shenandoah, and Samuel Kelley of Villisca.
