Description	:	Emerson Hartwell Groseclose's name is occasionally misspelled with two "m"s or "mb", and later in life he went almost exclusively by his nickname "Emery". His WA death certificate shows him as "Emery G. Groseclose" but it is in error, and all the other info proves it is our Emerson (spouse, parents' names, dates.) Emerson was born in Wythe Co, VA to John Hill Groseclose and his first wife Lucy Ann (Ashlin) Groseclose. He was the firstborn of six children, one of whom seems to have been stillborn. His father John Hill Groseclose, the story goes, "was a spoiled only son of an affluent planter... [who] drank, gambled, and womanized" and his mother, I was told, died "of TB and Sorry." His second wife hanged herself. After that, while walking through the forest, he heard singing, looked up and had a vision of Lucy and his mother in heaven, singing, "and he was converted." In 1863, at age 15, Emerson tried to join the Southern Army, but was rejected due to his age. Determined to fight for the South, he tried again, making application under the name of his father John Hill Groseclose, who was unable to serve due to illness. This time he was accepted, and remained in the Army until he was wounded and sent home. After recuperating, Emerson sought again to enlist under his own name, since by this time his father had also recuperated and had taken his place in the Army. Again he was rejected due to his age. Knowing how difficult his father was during his growing up years, and having lost his mother and step mother, it is not surprising that after the war Emerson, along with the next two brothers, "went west." John Chesley, the youngest brother, and Virginia Catherine, the only daughter and youngest child, both stayed back in VA, but Emerson, Everett Calvin, and William Mitchell Groseclose went to Missouri and Illinois, then Kansas. All three brothers married during their time in the mid-west, then Emerson seems to have headed to on to Washington while the other two went to Texas, where Everett, along with his wife and youngest son, died young, leaving his two oldest children orphans. William was there with them for awhile, then moved to NM, and he is buried there. Emerson married Julia Ann Burch, probably in Kansas, and they had four children: Ada, Arthur, Lucille, and Benjamin. Julia seems to have died shortly after their fourth child was born. She is buried in Kansas. The family arrived in Walla Walla Washington around 1890, where an early photo shows Emerson with all four children but no wife, and the youngest (Benjamin?) is but a toddler. Daughter Ada died at age 14, and is buried in Walla Walla. After arriving in Washington, Emerson worked in the grocery and mercantile business both in Walla Walla and later, around 1915, in Seattle, where he finally retired at age 86. Emerson died at his home, 511 Terry Avenue, on August 16, 1936, aged 88. A Requiem Mass was said for him at St. James Cathedral and he was buried at Calvary Cemetery. His obituary ran August 18, 1936 in the Seattle Daily Times, where he was lauded as a Civil War Veteran, one of the last remaining veterans of the Confederate Army.
