Read More	obituary: Emery Randels of Palmer met death by drowning about 11 o'clock last Saturday morning in a sand pit operated by Bud Knight six miles northeast of Chapman, where he had been employed recently. No one saw him fall in, but it is evident that he slipped off the plank which led to the pumping engine as he was carrying two 5-gallon cans of tractor fuel to the engine. The water was 15 or 20 feet deep at that place. His hat and the fuel cans were seen floating on the water about five minutes after he had left the gravel trucks to refuel the engine. One of the men stripped his clothes and dived into the pit but his efforts were without success. About 12:30 the body was recovered with a hay rake upon the second trial. In the meantime a Grand Island rescue squad had been called, but all efforts at resuscitation were unavailing. Emery's watch had stopped at 10:45 indicating that his body had been in the water about an hour and 45 minutes. Funeral services were held at Palmer Methodist church in Palmer Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. L. A. Fishel, and burial was made in North Bend where the Randels formerly lived and have relatives buried. Emery George Randels began this life on July 31, 1917 at Silver Creek, Nebraska, and departed Saturday June 27, at the age of 24 years, 10 months and 25 days. In early childhood his parents moved to Fullerton, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school. The family moved to Palmer, Nebraska, about 6 years ago, where they have since resided, although Emery spent two years working in California. He came home 12 weeks ago expecting to be called into the service of his country. While awaiting the call of his country, he took the task of helping pump sand at a sandpit near Chapman, where he met his untimely death. He leaves in passing his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Randels, two sisters, Mrs. Clement Samson of Sacramento, California, and Ruth at home, as well as many other relatives and friends. He liked to attend Sunday School and while living at Palmer attended the Christian Sunday School. His first thought was of his family who were real pals to him. When he came from California, he brought his sister for a family reunion. Emery was always industrious, kind and friendly. His smile won many friends.
