The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Wessington, with Pastor Stan Gruneich officiating. Burial will be in the Wessington Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home and a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Welter Funeral Home. He was born Oct. 24, 1897, in Snyder Neb., to Mr. and Mrs. Fred (Louisa Fraderich) Martens. At the age of 12 he moved with his family to the Wessington area. On Sept. 30, 1920, he married Martha Moller and they lived on a farm north of Wessington. In 1936 they moved to a farm south of Wessington. He was active in many community affairs. He played a major role in the 1952 establishment of the Sully Buttes Telephone Cooperative. He was named a member of the founding board of directors of the cooperative and in 1977 he was recognized nationally for his service to the cooperative. He resigned from the board in 1984. His wife became a resident of Violet Tschetter Nursing Home in 1978 and he drove from the farm in the Wessington foothills to be with her every day until her death in 1984. Survivors include a son, Stanley, of Wessington; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorthy and David Gilliland, West Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Mrs. James (Marilyn) Legg, Mrs. John (Gail) Ryan, Alan Gilliland, Jean Gilliland, Stephen, Robert and Scott Martens, and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Martens, his parents, a brother, Harry Martens, and a sister, Etta Clarke. Pallbearers will be Nova Palmer, Jack Duxbury, Henry Sievers, Paul Duxbury, Wayne Horsley and Joh Radcliffe. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
