Description	:	Emil Rudolph "E.R." Keil was born in LaPorte County, Indiana. Both of his parents were immigrants from Prussia, though they met and married after they arrived in the United States. Both of his parents were immigrants from Prussia, though they met and married after they arrived in the United States. E.R. was the second of eight children. As a young man with his parents and siblings, he migrated to Billings, Montana in the early 1900s. In August 1902 in Billings, he married Bertha Geraldine Awe, who was born in Billings. E.R. and some of his brothers established the Keil Company, a grocery wholesale supply firm in Billings. About 1910 he and two of his brothers left Billings and moved to San Diego, California, where they established Keil Brothers wholesale grocery supply in San Diego in 1916. "E.R." sold out his share of the business and he took his family to Bachelor, Lake County in northern California, where he purchased the Saratoga Springs Hotel in 1920. Saratoga Springs was established as a resort in 1871, in an area a few hours north of San Francisco Bay Area. The mountainous area had a number of lakes, but the Saratoga Springs had a number of cold mineral springs which were use for bathing and the water was bottled for drinking. The 260-acre facility at one time could accommodate up to 250 people, and its amenities included a stagecoach stop, post office, restaurant and dance hall. E.R. and Bertha continued to operate the resort until his death in 1936, and Bertha continued operations until after the 1940s. The Upper Lake Cemetery is where E.R.'s mother, Pauline Froelich Keil (1842-1822) is buried. She was probably living with E.R. and Bertha Keil when they purchased Saratoga Springs in 1920, and she died while living with them there. Obituary: "Former Billings Merchant Dies; Brother of W.C. Keil Succumbs at Home in California," The Billings Gazette (Billings, Montana), Thursday, 23 Jan 1936, p. 2 E.R. Keil, 65, former wholesale groceryman here [Billings], died Tuesday at his home in Bachelor, California, according to word received here by his brother and former business associate, William C. Keil, president of the Keil company.. At one time Mr. Keil was manager and buyer for Yegen Bros., wholesale grocers. He left Billings in 1910 and with his brothers, William and Fred, operated a wholesale grocery establishment under the firm name of Keil Brothers at San Diego. In 1916 the three launched the local wholesalw grocery firm, Keil company. Several years later E.R. sold out to his brothers and went to Bachelor, where he purchased and operated the Saratoga Springs hotel. He is survived by his widow, the former Bertha Awe of Billings; two sons, Paul and William; three daughters, Dorothy, Alice and Betty; four sisters and the Billings brother.
