Emilia Schilling, daughter of John and Christina (Schlepp) Schilling was born June 10, 1917 on her parents homestead northeast of Ashley. This is where she grew up, attending country school. She worked on the family farm. She was united in marriage to Jacob Landsiedel on November 17, 1938 at Peace Lutheran Church Parsonage ten miles east of Ashley. They made their home on his farm in the same area as her parent's farm. In 1944 they were flooded out and moved to a neighboring farm where they continued to farm as general farmers. In November of 1959 they retired and moved into Ashley. Jacob died on December 28, 1974. Emilia started working at the Ashley Bakery in October of 1975 and continued to work there until October of 1985. For many years, she made artificial flower arrangements for several people including for weddings, funerals, memorials and graduations. She was then united in marriage to Fred Helfenstein on May 17, 1984 at Ashley. They spent their retirement years in Ashley. Fred died on April 14, 2002. She entered the Ashley Nursing Home in January of 2006. Emilia enjoyed cooking, baking and crocheting was a favorite pastime. She liked to play cards with friends and keeping up on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's lives and activities brought her much joy. At the nursing home, she would share her talents by making knepfla and kas knepfla. Emilia was a member of Ashley Baptist Church and past member of Women's Missionary Society, Tabitha Fellowship, Ashley Medical Center Auxiliary and Ashley Senior Center. Survivors include four daughters, Mavis Schock of Ashley, Violet (Bruce) Frisch of Fergus Falls, MN, LuElla (Duane) Schauer of East Grand Forks, MN and Gaylene (Randy) Ptacek of Cogswell, ND, nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Her parents, both husbands, two sisters, two brothers and one son-in-law, Marvin Schock preceded her in death. Honorary Casketbearers will be Emilia's great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Casketbearers will be her grandchildren, Twila Schock, Neal Frisch, Mike Frisch, Shanon Schauer, Steven Schauer, Bob Schauer, Keith Schauer, Perry Ptacek and Darren Ptacek. The organist will be Jean Schnabel, soloist is Lana Christmann and the Ashley Baptist Men's Quartet with perform. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
