Emily Auten was born in Kalamazoo, county, Michigan, August 10th, 1844. she was the daughter of Thomas and Rizpah Auten, who died when she was but a mere child, She then made her home with her elder sister, Jane, wife of J. C. Butterfield one of the early settles of Knox Co. After the death of the elder Butterfields, she made her home with their children, her nieces and nephews. During the past twenty years she has spent some of her time with a brother and sister in Iowa. Miss Auten came with her sisters family to Buchanan Co., Iowa in 1860, she lived there until 1879 when she came to them to Walnut Grove, Knox Co., Nebr. Miss Auten was never married and her life was spent in serving those of her relatives and friends who needed her services most, her many virtues of head and heart cannot be realized except by those who came in close association with her. Her parent's family consisted of three sons and four daughters namely: Frank Auten, of Winthrope, Iowa; Mrs. J. C. Butterfield and Mrs. Frederick Aldrich, deceased; and Nathaniel, Andrew and Sarah all of Michigan, deceased. Miss Auten has long been a member of the Methodist church and died in that faith. The funeral services were held in the Venus church at 11:00 Saturday conducted by Rev. Pickett of Walnut. Many beautiful flowers were placed on the casket, a host of friends paid their last respects. The remains were laid to rest in Hope cemetery.
