Description	:	Hawarden Independent, March 5, 1914: Death of Mrs. Emily Thornton Emily C. Warner was born May 5, 1829, at Angelica, N. Y. She was married to Cuyler C. Helm July 3, 1849. They came to Monticello. Iowa in 1865, where her husband died in 1866. Four children were born to this union, two dying in infancy. Those living are Mrs. Sarah Crandall of Clinton, Minn., and Geo. R. Here she was married to Serrill Thornton Sr. in 1872, and here they resided until a few years before the death of Mr. Thornton which occurred in Hawarden in 1894. Mrs. Thornton continued to reside in Hawarden until about four years ago, since which time she has lived at the home of her stepson, Serrill C. Thornton of Canton, S. D. Mrs. Thornton united with the M. E. church in 1857 and was a consistent member of the same until her death. In her last illness she suffered from a stroke of paralysis. Her extreme age and frail constitution prevented all hope of her recovery. Patient hands ministered to her comfort so far as possible even to the last, but gradually she became weaker until the lamp of life flickered out Wednesday morning at three o'clock, Feb. 25, 1914. Short funeral services were held at the home of Serrill Thornton Saturday morning, conducted by Rev. Thurston. The remains were brought to Hawarden, where they were laid to rest in Grace Hill cemetery. The many friends of the bereaved extend heartfelt sympathies.
