Not as a thief in the night who breaks in while the household sleeps, but rather as a besieger who has long battled at the walls of the fortress until it finally crumbles under his persistent attacks, did death come to claim the should of Mrs. Hiram Bowman. For weeks, in fact for months, the battle had been raging with disease slowly gaining in spite of all that medical skill and loving care could do to ward off the intruder. But no matter how long Death is expected we are never ready for his coming and ht loss if felt almost as keenly as though his visit had been a surprise. For a year or more past Mrs. Bowman has been in poor health with attacks of serious illness coming more and more frequent until for several weeks past she had been confined to her bed and with but faint hopes that anything could be done to reliever her. Emily Dianah McAvoy was born in Philadelphia, Pa., August 15, 1855 and died at Wessington, S.D., Nov. 17 1916, being at the time of her death 61 years, 3 months and 2 days old. At the age of 11 years she went with her parents to LaCross, Wis., where she spent her girlhood days, moving to Pratt County Kansas, in July 1877. On October 9, 1878 she was united in marriage to Hiram Bowman, at Iuka, Kansas. To this union 9 children were born, all but one, who died in infancy survive her. In early girlhood she united with the Presbyterian Church, always living up to its principles. Though afflicted, she was always cheerful and uncomplaining constantly striving to help someone in anyway she could. Through her long and trying illness she was always the same, dear patient, wife and mother, never loosing hope and always smiling. She leaves to mourn her loss a sorrowing husband, 2 sons and six daughter, beside 10 grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon. The church was crowded to its utmost capacity with relatives, neighbors and family friends. The casket was almost completely concealed with beautiful floral offerings, contributed by friends and the various fraternal orders. Rev. Spence preached an excellent surmon, dwelling at length on the many virtues of the deceased and the wonderful example she had set to her family and neighbors in the life of a true Christian.
