Merriam, wife of Chas. H. Merriam, passed away and her sufferings were over. Such had been her life, and her devotion to church work, that no doubt if she could have had her choice of the hour to take her departure into the better land, no more appropriate time could have been chosen, than this quiet Sabbath morning, amid the music of the church bells, the songs of spring birds and budding flowers. The passing of such people as Mrs. Merriam does not seem like death, it is more like a sweet sleep, a rest from pain and weariness, a transition, a step over the threshold of a clime where we have left the aching body behind. She was a good woman. She did not claim to be brilliant or to shine in what is termed the great on earth, but she was content to be a star, a small star, to continually shine under all kinds of conditions. God surely loved her because she was so meek, humble and was so quietly doing things. She belonged to the class who was welcomed by the Lord when he said "Inasmuch as ye have done it to the least of these ye have done it unto me." Emily R. Wiles was born in Zanesville, Ohio, in the year 1846. When a child she moved with her parents to Muscatine County, Iowa, where she grew up. In 1881 her family came to Kansas, she coming with them and settled close to Cherokee. In 1895 she married Charles H. Merriam, who survived her. In early childhood she joined the Methodist church, and has been a consistent worker to her last sickness. Her special work was the Women's Foreign Missionary work, being the treasurer of the local branch at the time of her death. She had been sick for about a year, but not confined to her bed until a few weeks before her death. Funeral services were held at the home on Monday, and her remains were interred in the Cherokee cemetery. She leaves one brother and three sisters who survive her, T.J. Wiles, Mrs. W.T. Winter, Mrs. M.J. McCants, and Mrs. T.J. Lisenbee, all of this city. Beautiful floral offerings attested a faint reflection of the esteem in which her friends held her.
