Colonel Marion W. Vickers, have resided for the past two years. A memorial service is planned for 3P.M. Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Ingleside Baptist Church. Dr. Tim McCoy and Dr. E. C. Born in Macon March 9, 1921, Ms. Vickers graduated from A.L. Miller High School in 1938, and attended Wesleyan College, from which she graduated magna cum laude in chemistry in 1942. After college, she went to work at Proctor and Gamble as a chemist. She and Colonel Vickers were married in 1943. As the wife of an army officer, Emily traveled with her husband throughout the world, living for a time in Osaka Japan, and Stuttgart, Germany. After retiring from the service in 1961 the Vickers returned to Macon to raise their family. In 1963, Emily began her teaching career, first as a business math teacher, then as a physical education instructor at A.L. Miller High School. In 1969, Ms. Vickers received a masters degree in education from Mercer University and began teaching reading at Winship Elementary School. She retired in 1982. A devoted supporter of her Alma Mater, she was an active member of the Macon Wesleyan Alumnae Club, served as decorations chair for the annual Alumnae weekend, and as club president from 1988 - 1990. In recognition of her service, the club established the Wesleyan College Emily Scholarship Fund in her honor, in 1990. Funds from the scholarship are awarded each year to a deserving student. She was also a member of the Wesleyan Society for the 21st Century. Among the many commitments to the Macon community for which Emily will be remembered was her dedication to Ingleside Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Inglelights, the Mary-Martha Sunday School Class, and Chairman of the Floral Committee for twenty years. She was also an Exchangette, working alongside her husband for many years in the Exchange Club booth at the Georgia State Fair. Her dedication to physical fitness led her to compete in the Golden Olympics, where she participated in three national competitions, winning several awards for swimming, including a 6th place national ranking in the 100 meter butterfly event at age 79. She is survived by her husband, 3 daughters, Dr. Marilyn Vickers of Athens, GA, Camille Vickers of New York, NY, Emily L. Vickers of Hopewell, NJ, her son, Nathan Vickers of San Rafael, CA and two grandchildren, Laura Vickers Chittick of New Haven, CT, Nathaniel Vickers Chittick, of Camp Pendleton, CA. She is pre-deceased by her grandson, William Vickers Chittick. She is also survived by the family of Dr. Won Jun, who Col. Vickers met while on duty in South Korea in 1957 and sponsored for US citizenship in 1966. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Wesleyan College Emily Scholarship Fund or the Ingleside Baptist Church Building Fund.
