Emily most likely died before the 1870 Census as Emma and her older sister Minnetta Leona Wood were farmed out to two different families. In 1870 sister Minnetta Age 3 was living with her mothers's parents Henry and Julia Cox in Meigs Co, Ohio. Emma has not been found on the 1870 census, but the 1880 Census shows Emma living with her Aunt Emma V Wood Manning and William Manning. OBITUARY - The Newton Daily News, Friday Afternoon, October 17, 1919 DEATH CLAIMS NEWTON WOMAN Mrs. Glenn Chase Dies at Wesley Hospital in Chicago Early This Morning Following Operation Friends in this city were shocked when a message came at 10:30 today announcing the sudden death of Mrs. Glenn F. Chase, which occurred in Chicago, this morning. Mrs. Chase, accompanied by her son, Riley, left October 5 for Chicago where she entered the Wesley hospital for treatments. The operation, found necessary, was performed last Saturday and favorable reports came from the sick room, until Wednesday October 15, when complications arose which were most alarming to her son, and to her husband who had arrived the day before the operation took place. The news of her death was telegraphed to Mrs. Byron Chesnutt where Mrs. Chase and her young daughter Miss Judith, had rooms for the winter. Mrs. Chase has not been well for several years and had sold her home and in order that her responsibilities might be lessened she had taken rooms for light housekeeping, with a short interval spent in Red Oak last winter where the older daughter Barbara, was temporarily located. Mrs. Chase and Judith returned to Newton last summer, remaining with Mrs. Chesnutt as Judith again enrolled with the High school students here. During these months she had buoyed her failing strength in the hopes of her son Riley 's expected return from overseas., where he served with the A.E.F., his delay in being transported home having arisen from an appointment to serve with the inter allied commission at Vienna. He received his discharge and arrived in Newton but one week before it became necessary to accompany his mother to the hospital, so that their reunion was a pitifully brief one. Mr. Chase and Riley are expected home Saturday morning, and Miss Barbara Chase arrives this evening from Iowa City where she is a student at the university. Emma Woods was born in Pittsburgh, March 25, 1869. While yet a child her mother died and she was brought to Newton by relatives. During her girlhood and until her marriage she made her home with her foster father Mr. William Manning, to whom she was extremely devoted and whose interest in her welfare never diminished to his death. He gave her his name and as Emma Manning she was known to her friends and to her boarding school associates at the Immaculate Conception, Davenport. She was married October 10, 1894 to Mr. Glenn F. Chase and as mistress of their home she created an atmosphere of culture and refinement for her children which must be respected in them during the years that are to come. The husband, the son and two daughters carry loving memories of her eternal vigilance and concern for their happiness. Besides Mr. Chase, Riley, Barbara and Judith, she leaves a sister Mrs. Minnie Garvey of Euranium, Col., and two half brothers, Joe Woods who resides in the east and William Woods of Wyoming. Mrs. Chase was an active member of the Congregational church, lending her energies at all times to its advancement, she also was numbered with the Pythian Sisters, Hunter Temple with whom she spent many happy hours, here too, giving of her physical strength sometimes beyond caution for her own well being. As a member of Chapter A.O.P.E.O. she entered into every activity with a joy born of fine intellectual attainments and a tact for accomplishing what she set out to do. Her place in its literary and social life will be greatly missed. The plans for the funeral will be announced tomorrow after the arrival of Mr. Chase and Riley.
