Miss Emma Arnold, 64, rural Monticello, was in "fair" condition Tuesday at John McDonald hospital. She suffered burns over 40 per cent of her body when a hot wood-burning stove overturned on her. Her home, which she shared with a brother Christi, was demolished when struck by a twister. Arnold escaped injury. The Arnold home was located about 6 1/2 miles northwest of Monticello in the Hardscrabble area of Castle Grove township. The Herman Steuri and Dean Tedrow farms in this area were also hit. The tornado, which hit the area about 7 p.m., first went through the Andrew Watt, Henry Ahlrich and Albert Oltmann farms and then hopped through Castle Crove, hitting the Sam Strief and Matt Muller farms before plowing into the Hardscrabble area. The tornado left a marked path through farmland and timbered areas. It hit the Lux Hatchery at the south edge of Hopkinton before apparently lifting up and leaving the area. BRINGS HELP A neighbor boy, John Bader, 16, is credited with saving Miss Arnold's life. After the twister hit, young Bader, who lives about 1 1/2 to 2 miles across the fields from the Arnold home, started out following the path of the tornado. He found the Arnold home demolished. He lifted the stove off Miss Arnold and with the help of Mr. Arnold wrapped her in a blanket and took her out of the rubble. He then went to the George Rieniets home to call for help. Caption under a picture of destroyed items laying on the ground by a tree -- "This pile of rubble is all that is left of the Emma and Christi Arnold home in the Harcscrabble area, 6 1/2 mile northwest of Monticello, following Monday evening's tornado. Miss Arnold was seriously injured when the twister ripped through the home, toppling a hot wood-burning stove on top of her. Her brother escaped injury.
