They were the parents of Ernest, Gladys, Darrel, and Marjorie. July 27, 1944 - Newell Mirror - Emma Christiansen, daughter of John and Anna Christiansen was born at Cedar Falls, Iowa on the nineteenth day of August, 1888. She resided with her parents in Cedar Falls and later at Newell, Iowa until her marriage to Harry Shook on December 23, 1908. To this union four children were born. One of them, Darrell died in infancy. One son, Ernest Shook lives at Antioch, Illinois and daughter Gladys (Mrs. Charles Carey) lives near Spencer and Marjorie is at home. She leaves to cherish the memory of her good and useful life, besides her husband and the son and daughters just mentioned four brothers: Hans C. Christiansen, Hollendale, Minnesota; Andrew Christiansen, Albert Lea, Minnesota; John Christiansen, Alden, Minn.; Arthur Christiansen, Mineota, Minn; two sisters, Mrs. Axel Kjolhede of Grant, Mich; and Mrs. Nels Miller of Waterloo. Also six grandchildren: Constance, Curtis and Dixie Shook, Carolyn, James, Jerry Carey. Besides these there are many relatives and a host of friends. Mrs. Shook lived 11 years at Newell, 12 at Gruver, 10 at Estherville and then came to the Spencer community. Mrs. Shook was a member of and active in the Rebekah Lodge while her health permitted. She was confirmed in the Danish Lutheran church but after her marriage united with the Methodist church of which she was a member at the time of her death. In late years because of ill health she was not able to take her place in the various activities of the church as in former years when she was active in choir, Sunday school and held offices in the women's organizations and various other work of the church life. She has been in poor health for years and was bedfast and suffered much during the last 4 1/2 months during which time she was very patient and retained her cheerful spirit. Mrs. Shook was a devoted wife and mother and her chief interest in life was to do helpful things for her family and her friends. She endeared herself to her acquaintances by her true personality and friendly spirit. She was interested in the wholesome and uplifting. Those who knew her best recognized in her a simple and steadfast faith in God and interest in all that added to the highest welfare of mankind. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at the home and at the Methodist church in Spencer. The Rev. F.W. Ortmeyer officiated Mrs. K.R. Rowley and Mrs. Tony Riepma sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Sometime We'll Understand". Mrs. C.D. Ackerman accompanied on the organ. Burial was made at the Newell Cemetery at Newell. Pallbearers were Byron Gould and Lyle Knight of Spencer, Nathan Gould of Milford, Henry Lundibick of Royal, Ross Wilson of Emmetsburg and H. Jones of Linn Grove. Honorary pallbearers were Lewis L. Folck, state man from the Funk Bros. Seed Company, Wayne Conrad, R.O. Burrows and two other office men of the seed company all from Belle Plaine. Attending the services from a distance were the four brothers mentioned above and a sister, Mrs. Nels Miller of Waterloo, Charles Nissen, Mrs. Lena Hamilton and daughter Esther of Worthington, Minn., Mrs. H.M. Shook who is the mother-in-law of the deceased and Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Galraith, Mr. and Mrs. O.F. Bellows, Mr. and Mrs John Bellows and Mrs. Clifford Olsen all of Newell besides many friends from Gruver and Estherville.
