Toms Held on Thursday Funeral services for Mrs. M. H. Toms, 61, whose sudden death from a basel hemorrhage on Tuesday [May 8, 1945] forenoon came as a distinct chock to her family and friends, were held Thursday afternoon at the First Methodist church in Nevada with Rev. O. E. Cooley in charge of the services. Mr. Norman Dobson was at the organ, Mrs. Theron Case sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". The floral offerings were many and beautiful, completely banking the front of the church. The church was filled with sorrowing relatives and friends in attendance at the last rites of this devoted wife, mother and grandmother. The pallbearers were Clyde Hostetter, Paul Peterson, Frank Kinsman, W. W. Alexander, W. E. Huff and Robert Ogden. Committal ws in the Nevada cemetery. Mrs. Toms was a charter member of the R.E.K. club and as a mark of love and respect for their departed member the club prepared and served a dinner for the family group at the L. M. Tom's home in Nevada. Always devoted to her family and friends and every ready to assist others in time of need she will be greatly missed in the community. The following obituary was read by Rev. Cooley at the funeral service: Mrs. M. H. Toms, daughter of Chas. H. and Virginia Dawson was born on October 29, 1883 at Lexington, Illinois. She passed away at her home near Nevada on Tuesday, May 8, 1945. In 1892 she came to Story county, Iowa, where she has since lived. On November 2, 1896 she was married to W. H. Toms, the wedding taking place a Valparaisia, Ind. To this union six children were born, Lawrence, John, Pearl, Ted, Clyde and Violet. Of this group John is deceased, having died in 1917. Mrs. Toms leaves besides her husband, M. H. Toms, her five living children, twelve grand children. She also leaves the following brothers and sister, Nellie R. Bishop, Washington, D. C.; Mildred M. Ballard, Ames; Herbert E. Dawson, Dallas, Texas; Mearl M. Dawson, Dallas, Texas; Eniza M. Samson, Boone; Mabel E. Dawson, Dallas, Texas; Irene F. Willford, Memphis, Tenn. The brother Clarence died in 1943 and Eugene in 1886. Mrs. Toms' passing was very sudden. She had not been seriously ill prior to her death. Her passing was a severe shock to the family and her many friends. Mrs. Toms was well and favorably known around Nevada. She was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Nevada Methodist church. At one time Mrs. Toms was a member of the Christian church. In later years she attended the Methodist church. Besides the immediate family, the sisters, Mrs. Mildred Ballard of Ames and Mrs. Emza Samson of Boone were in attendance at the services. Other brothers and sisters were unable to be present because of travel conditions. The sympathy of the community is extended the husband in the loss of a faithful companion and the children in the loss of a devoted mother and grandmother.
