She died Monday, June 4, 2007, at her daughter's home in McLean, Va. Emma Frederika Bendewald Fischer, daughter of Gottlieb and Frederika (Opp) Bendewald, was born Oct. 29, 1916, on a homestead farm in McIntosh County, N.D. She lived a healthy full life until her 90th year. Emma was a beautiful woman in appearance and in spirit. She loved the Lord and served him all of her life with joy and love for her fellow man. She was an active member of her community and of the Lutheran church, and was a member of Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid since 1947. She was united in marriage to Christoph Fischer on Oct. 15, 1935; he preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1997. They had a wonderful, loving relationship, and especially enjoyed singing and companionship with friends and family. They lived abroad with their daughter, Shirley, for six months nearly every winter beginning in 1970. Upon his death, Emma lived with her daughter and her grandchildren: Jacqueline Grace Arends and Christopher John Arends. Her grandchildren and her great-granddaughter, Caroline Grace, brought so much joy and love into her life. Emma enjoyed cooking and baking and was known far and wide for her good food, including other places where she lived: Vienna, Geneva, Copenhagen, Munich, Berlin, and McLean and Alexandria in Virginia. She communicated through language and through food and was beloved by everyone. Everywhere she lived, she touched lives and made lifelong friends. Emma, who was very hurt when she had to leave school after the eighth grade to care for her crippled mother, received recognition from Georgetown University in 1988 for her field work in collecting Dakota German customs and folkways. She was especially recognized for her linguistic skill in making special German dialect language tapes. Her daughter, Shirley, was thrilled to share recognition for her Ph.D. with her mother. Emma lived a joyful successful life filled with love and goodness, fulfilling the Scriptures admonition to love the Lord thy God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as thyself. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Fischer Arends of McLean, Va.; one granddaughter, Jacqueline G. Arends of McLean, Va.; one grandson, Christopher J. (Bridget) Arends of McLean, Va.; and one great-granddaughter, Caroline G. Arends. Her parents; husband; three brothers: Edward, David and John; and three sisters: Mathilda Strobel, Rosina Nitschke and Katherine Miller preceded her in death. Casketbearers will be Harvey Bendewald, Curtis Bendewald, LeRoy Bendewald, Christopher Arends, Jonathan Giles and Erich Schock. The organist will be Steve Glaesmann and the soloists will be Terry Ulrich and Lana Christmann. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
