Holmes, passed peacefully away at the family home in Marcy township shortly before midnight Saturday night, following an illness of several months with stomach trouble and other complications. It was known for some time to her family and friends that her condition was critical and although all that loving hands and hearts could do to prolong her life was done, yet her death was not unexpected; still it came with no less crushing force to the devoted family and friends. Funeral services were held from the home at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon and despite the rainy weather a large concourse of friends both from their immediate neighborhood and from Boone and from her old home in Story County were in attendance. The services were conducted by the Rev. Geo. D. Crissman of the First M.E. church of this city who delivered a very consoling discourse. A selected ladies quartet sang appropriate numbers. The remains were then escorted to the Rose Hill cemetery, only a short distance from the home and in the care of which for many years she had taken such a loving interest, where they were tenderly laid to rest. The ladies of Gem Temple Pythian Sisters, of which she had long been a most loyal and devoted member, and the ladies of the Rose Hill Cemetery Association, acted as a guard of honor and marched behind the remains to the cemetery. The Pythian Sisters conducted their beautiful ritualistic service at the grave. Many members of the Knights of Pythias were also present as an auxiliary guard, the active pall bearers being selected from their number. The floral emblems from relatives and friends and from the societies were profuse and beautiful, graciously attesting the love and esteem of all. Emma Hardcastle, daughter of Thomas and Sybil Hardcastle, was born in Minnesota Feb., 14 1859. In 1862 the family came to Iowa and settled in Story county, where the aged father still resides, the mother having passed away in 1875. Nov. 1, 1885 she was united in marriage with Thomas B. Holmes in Story county and has since resided in this county. To Mr. and Mrs. Holmes were born three children, Elizabeth and LeRoy still at home with the father, and William R. who preceded her in death. Beside the devoted husband and two loving children, she is survived by her aged father, one sister, Mrs. Anna Chapman of Ames, and two brothers, W.R. Hardcastle of Ames and Daniel of California. Mrs. Holmes was essentially a home loving woman, sincerely devoted to the comfort and happiness of her husband and children and ever smilingly kind and courteous to neighbors and friends alike. While not actually affiliating with any particular religious denomination, yet we knew her to be a true Christian woman of the highest type. It was our pleasure and honor to know her will and we know whereof we speak. One of nature's noble women has been called to her final reward. Mrs. Holmes was a devoted and while health permitted, an active member of Gem Temple No 52, Pythian Sisters and her genial smile, pleasant and kind disposition and wise council will long be missed by her sisters. She took an especially active part in the Rose Hill cemetery near her home and where her body now reposes; in fact was a prime mover in placing the organization upon a financial basis and was the first president of the association and there too is well as in her happy home she will be keenly missed..
