Emma was born Oct. 31, 1920, a stormy Halloween night, on a dryland farm 13 miles from Glasgow, to Thomas and Ernestine Olinger, both of German descent and immigrants from Austria in the early 1900s. Emma attended Glasgow High School graduating valedictorian in 1939. She was accepted at Billings Polytechnic Institute (now Rocky Mountain College) as a work-study student, and attended Billings Business College. In the spring of 1942, Emma and several classmates took civil service exams making them eligible for government jobs in Washington, D.C. She also attended night school at the Strayer College of Business, taking advanced accounting and business law, while living and working in Washington, D.C. Emma married her college sweetheart, Robert L. Boyd, on Dec. 18, 1943, at Fort Douglas Chapel in Salt Lake City. In 1945, Emma and Robert returned to Billings and started their family. Between taking care of her family, she also worked with several accounting firms. The family moved to Yellowstone Park in 1967. Emma was the clerk, secretary and business manager for Gardiner Public Schools. Retirement came in July 1981, and Emma and Robert moved to their cabin near Island Park, Idaho - this was built on weekends while the family lived in Yellowstone. In 1982, Emma and Robert moved back to Billings. Retirement years found Emma busy with bowling, crewel pictures, pinochle, golf, gardening and bridge. She was an active participant in the Deaconess Sports & Arts Festival and the Big Sky State Games, being fortunate to win awards in both endeavors. Over a span of 11 years, Emma served as league officer and City Secretary of the Billings Women's Bowling Association, and inducted into the Bowler's Hall of Fame in 1984. Mom enjoyed being active and keeping busy. Her crewel pictures that she did over the years are appreciated and loved by many. Emma was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Ernestine; husband Robert; siblings Henry, Walter, and Edward Olinger, Bertha Spencer, Anna Bush, Laura Mae Maki; and son-in-law Wally Stewart. Emma is survived by her daughters, Roberta Stewart and Lorna Boyd of Billings, and Linda Gillett (Jim) of Clancy, and brothers Gordon Olinger (Linda) of Saco and William Olinger (Fran) of Great Falls. Emma also has four grandchildren, Brian (Deserae) Gillett of Chinook, Randy (Trish) Gillett of Napakiak, Alaska, Lynze Cooper (Matt) of Bozeman and Robbie Gillett of East Helena; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mom has requested that no funeral/memorial service be held. The family will abide by her wishes. Emma will be buried along with husband Robert at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with a graveside farewell, A celebration of Emma's life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the loving care Mom received from Valley Health Care and RiverStone Health. Emma leaves you with this thought, "Be good to yourself and follow the golden rule: 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.' "
