Her death was due to heart trouble and complications. Her health began failing about a month ago and she was taken to the hospital when her condition became serious last week. Thursday night it became apparent that death was near. Mrs. Kersenbrock was a member of one of the early and prominent pioneer families of Platte county. She was a daughter of Frantz and Magdalene Henggeler, who came to America from Switzerland in 1854, resided several years at Dubuque, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska and than came to Platte county in 1858 homesteading on Shell creek seven miles north of Columbus. There Mrs. Kersenbrock was born Mar 9, 1860, in the log cabin which was then the family's home. Her childhood was typical of the childhood in those early pioneer homes when the hardships of winning a livelihood and a competence from the soil of the thereto unbroken prairies were encountered and overcome by the sturdy pioneers and their families. In the later years she recalled for her own children many of the incidents of those early days. When she was a little child, the Indians were still roaming the prairies, and often the Indian squaws (women) would look in at the windows of the little home and watch her mother feed her with a spoon. To them the use of a spoon seemed unnecessary. The Indians she recalled, were always friendly to the family because her father (Franz) gave them a camping place near the creek on the homestead and would occasionally give them a "critter" to eat. She recalled, too, the "grasshopper years", and the winter storms when the snow would be so deep that the course of the creek would not be discernable from the nearby fields. One of the outstanding memories of her childhood days was the time that her father brought the family into Columbus in a wagon drawn by oxen to see the first train that steamed into Columbus on the new Union Pacific Railroad. Her marriage to J. H. Kersenbrock, then a young Columbus business man who had come herein 1876 from St. Louis and founded the Columbus brewery in partnership with her brother, Joseph, was solemnized in June, 1877 in West Point, Nebraska whither they had driven in a buggy for the ceremony. They established their home in Columbus and here they spent the remainder of their lives, except for a period of seven years from 1881 to 1887 when they lived at Crete (Nebraska) while Mr. Kersenbrock was in business there. His death occurred in Columbus in 1917. Mrs. Kersenbrock is survived by three sons and 2 daughters - Frank J. and Herman J. Kersenbrock of Columbus, both prominence among Nebraska traveling salesmen: William J. Kersenbrock, of Webster Grove, Mo, and Mrs. Charles Cockson of Minong, Minn., and Mrs. Fred Hille of Rolfe, IA. They were all here at the time of her death. Mr. and Mrs. William Kersenbrock, Mrs. Cockson, and Mr. and Mrs. Hille, having arrived yesterday in response to word of her serious condition. She leaves also one brother, Joseph Henggeler, of Stockville, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Monday at the Gass chapel. Rev. Carmony, pastor of the Methodist church officiating. Burial will be made in the Catholic cemetery where her parents and husband were laid to rest. Other: Emma's signed 1921 passport application listed her birth year as Mar 9, 1861.
