STOCKTON Dr. John R. Stockton, University of Texas Professor Emeritus of Business Statistics, died Wednesday, March 2, 1994, at the age of 90. Dr. Stockton, son of Emma Isabel and John Collins Stockton, was born on October 19, 1903, in Leon, Iowa. Following graduation in 1925 from Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee, he began his first teaching position in the Cumberland Mountains at Clay County High School in Celina, Tennessee, where he taught English and Latin and also served as an assistant football coach. After teaching one year, he returned to Iowa to pursue a master's degree at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He received his M.A. degree in 1927, and at the same time accepted a teaching position as an Instructor at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On December 24, 1928, he married Anna Beulah Vaughan. They were married for almost thirty-seven years and had three children: Joanne Beatrice Stockton, John R. Stockton, Jr., and Eileen Doris Stockton Hearn. Joanne died during childhood, and his wife, Beulah, died on August 29, 1965. After teaching two years at Coe College, Dr. Stockton accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Accounting at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the University of Iowa. He received his Ph.D. in 1932 and accepted a position as a marketing statistician for the Meredith Publishing Company in Des Moines.In 1935, Dr. Stockton joined the faculty in the Department of Business Services in the College of Business Administration at The University of Texas at Austin as Assistant Professor of Statistics. In 1937, he was promoted to Associate Professor, and in 1939 to Professor. In 1974, after thirty-nine years of service to the University, the state of Texas, and the nation, Dr. Stockton retired from The University of Texas at Austin. During his thirty-nine years as a faculty member at the University, he distinguished himself as a statistician, as a teacher, as an author, and in his service to the University, the Austin community, the state of Texas, and the nation.
