1926 Residence: Near the Black Hills in Lead, [Lawrence County,] SD. (Book, This and That).
Irene Dow Purdie writes in her book, This and That: "DETOUR--We knew that the handsome woman who came to visit us was Mother's cousin, but never questioned the exact connection. She was Minnie Turner when Wes and I knew her. Her husband was publishing a newspaper in Nevada, Cuba. Once she brought us a picture book of Cuba. Another time there were long strings of coral--one for Viola, one for Blanche, and one for Irene. When Clarence and Irene decided to honeymoon in the Black Hills in 1926 Mother said, "Take time to call on Paul and Emma (Blumenthal) Nelson in Lead, S.D. You'll like them." We did--take time! We did--like them! They showed us parts of the Black Hills and the Homestake Mining Company (Paul was an amalgamator in the Homestake Mill) that we wouldn't have found by ourselves. Every time after that when we came back from camping in the west, Emma welcomes us with open arms. She was Minnie Turner's daughter. So--when I began digging into my ancestry, I wrote to her with my imaginings about the Gould Family. Her answer: "May 15, 1966. Mamma's maiden name was Sherman. She had two own brothers, and one half. Her mother was Cornelia Gould Sherman, a sister of YOUR Grandmother Lucretia Mills". My guess was right!"
