Funeral services were held Saturday, April 20 [1963], at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Lake Andes with the Rev. Leslie B. Lewis conducting the rites. Interment was in the Lakeview Cemetery in Lake Andes, under the direction of the Stedronsky Funeral Home. Emma Besst Steele was born July 19, 1882 at Wall Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Jessie and Mary Baker Besst. She was united in marriage to Ira J. Steele in October, 1904 at Onawa, Iowa. They moved to Lake Andes the same month, being one of the first families to settle in this city. Mrs. Steel was perhaps the first bride in the city of Lake Andes. They operated the General Merchandise Store, just west of where Nick's Dry Goods is now located, for several years and later Mr. Steele worked for the Standard Oil Bulk Service. He died in 1936 from burns suffered when his truck caught fire. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Decatur, Neb, member of the Order of Eastern Star of Lake Andes and White Shriner of B???. Mrs. Steel was also active in the Presbyterian Church of Lake Andes in her earlier days. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Marion; one daughter, Ruby Jane and parents, one sister and one brother. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Aria Andersen and Mrs Eleanora Pester of Sunnyvale, Calif.; Mrs. Nadine Wells of Torrance, Calif.; and Mrs. Mary Eckley of Brewster, Neb.; two sons, Gordon and George, both of Seattle, Wash.; one sister Miss Hester Besst of Freemont, Neb.; two brothers, Walter Besst of Procupine, S.D. and Greeley Besst of Potlash, Idaho and may grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Victor Nelson, Pete Novotay, Bill Grajkowake, George Schekel, Ray Stedronsky and Jess Maruska.
