Description	:	Emma Lou Arensberg, 76, Atchison, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at Atchison Hospital. Emma Lou was born June 28, 1933, in Wichita, the daughter of Andrew and Ruth Cruise Keithline. She completed her primary education and two years of secondary education in Wellington, moving then to Atchison, where she graduated from Mount St. Scholastica Academy. She and Richard P. Read More	Emma Lou Arensberg, 76, Atchison, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at Atchison Hospital. Emma Lou was born June 28, 1933, in Wichita, the daughter of Andrew and Ruth Cruise Keithline. She completed her primary education and two years of secondary education in Wellington, moving then to Atchison, where she graduated from Mount St. Scholastica Academy. She and Richard P. "Dick" Arensberg were united in marriage on July 21, 1951, at St. Joseph's Church, Atchison. Emma Lou was an impassioned advocate for mentally disabled people. In 1962, she wrote a letter to the Atchison Daily Globe seeking parents who would be interested in helping their mentally retarded children live a more productive life. As a result of her plea, a group of parents and several community leaders, with Emma Lou spearheading, made personal contacts in the community asking for funds. A month later, the Atchison County Association for Retarded Children was established. Their first school was a house at 317 N. Fourth St., later moving to Fairground School building. They provided education for children with volunteer teachers and donated money for them to operate the school. In 1968, the public school system took over the responsibility of the school. The association then focused all their attention on fundraising for their workshop for adults in the basement of Thompson's Restaurant and later the old Herndon Drive-In. Their efforts resulted in the formation of the Achievement Services for Northeast Kansas, Inc. Additionally, Emma Lou started, and with the assistance of the association and community members, provided funds for Atchison Special Olympics and camp scholarships for individuals wanting to attend summer camp. With endless love and determination, she helped bring about change and acceptance for people with mental disabilities in Atchison County. Emma Lou is survived by her husband, Richard P. "Dick" Arensberg, Atchison, a son, Richard Lee Arensberg, and a daughter-in-law, Patty Arensberg and their children, Craig Arensberg and his wife, Linda, and their daughter, Bailey and her daughter, Andi Stone and husband Dave, their children Carson and Cameron, and son Michael Arensberg, Overland Park, a daughter, Marcia Noll and her husband, Russell, of Oskaloosa, their children, Mason Clark and son, Sean of Omaha, Neb., U.S. Army Specialist Nichlos Noll, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, and Lauren Noll, Chicago, Ill., daughter-in-law, Susie Arensberg, Grandview, Mo., sisters, Francis Palmer, Amarillo, Texas, Patricia Buehler, Simpson, Lancaster, Pa., Rose Smith and husband Jack, Wellington, a brother, H. B. Keithline and wife Carol J., Kansas City, Kan., and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Lisa Marie Arensberg in 1984, a son Martin Alan "Jo-Jo" Arensberg in 2000, brothers, Andrew and wife Helen, James and wife Minnie and brothers-in-law, Bob Buehler, Frank Simpson and James Palmer. Mass of Christian burial was 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at St. Benedict's Church, with Rev. Gerard Senecal, OSB, as celebrant. A private family interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
