Born to Calvin and Ruby Gardinier in 1916, "Lidy" as she was affectionately known by both family and friends grew up on the High Valley Ranch west of Ellensburg with her two sisters Maryan and Harriett. Hers was a simple rural life with little conveniences but filled with an amount of enjoyment and homespun love to make us all envious as we listened to her retell of "days growing up". Lidy's life was almost entirely spent in the Kittitas valley and as a result she knew almost everyone in the valley and their heritage. She was the family genealogist that unearthed all of our family history which included some of the first settlers – the Rego family, into the Kittitas Valley. Lidy attended Cove grade school, a one room country school located close to the Manastash canyon. She graduated from Ellensburg High school in 1932. In 1934 she married Willard Pease and in 1936 their daughter, Doris (Sally) was born. Lidy later married David Vincent in 1941 and then ventured away to Alaska and Seattle for a short period of time during the 1940's before returning to the Kittitas valley where she spent the rest of her life. In 1950 she started her retail career by working as a store clerk at Morgan's Department store, then later at Ostrander's Drug for her son in law, Joe Schwab. At both stores she nurtured lasting relationships with all her customers. Even after her retirement customers would come to the store hoping she would have un-retired because they missed her. After 20 years of sharing her life with David, he passed away. In 1962 she married Lee Hauenstein and they were happily married for 32 years. Lee was an accomplished carpenter and the two of them remodeled the house on Manastash Creek and then bought property and built a cabin on Lake Cle Elum. The cabin became the short getaway for all family functions including 4th of July picnics and snowmobiling in for Christmas celebrations. Lidy's daughter Sally married Joe Schwab in 1955 and a few years later Lidy had two grandchildren, Graig and Mary. Lidy loved her grandchildren and seeing their enjoyment became her passion. Along with building the cabin she bought them a snowmobile to learn a new hobby. She filled countless hours with her grandchildren, both driving the snowmobile and riding behind it on a saucer. What a sight we will never forget! In later years, Lidy's two sisters returned to live nearby. The three sisters were within one mile of each other and finally back together. Lidy was delighted to have Maryan and Harriett and their families, again so close. All this time, she never stopped her interest in the family genealogy and left us with volumes of resources to help us understand our roots. Lidy's later years were blessed with the addition of four wonderful great grandchildren: Joey and Chris Allison, and Lydie and Ryan Schwab. Lidy loved her great grandchildren; she spent numerous hours reading to them and playing with them, and was always the first to offer them chocolate and a coke. Lidy refused to speak a bad word about anyone, as family and friends can attest. Lidy gave nothing but love and caring to all of us, even during difficult times. And for this, we are eternally grateful and will miss Lidy dearly. Lidy was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, and her sister, Maryan (Don) Sorenson. Lidy is survived by her daughter, Sally (Joe) Schwab, sister Harriett (George) Brain, nieces and nephews George Brain Jr., Marylou (Mike) Seeman, Linda (Emmett) Loane, grandchildren; Graig (Sue) Schwab, Mary (Bruce) Allison, and Great grandchildren; Lydie and Ryan Schwab, and Joey and Chris Allison A graveside service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, July 13th at the IOOF Cemetery, followed by a reception at 12pm at the Hal Holmes Center.
