Emma was born on May 1, 1910 on a farm west of Ashley, ND, the daughter of John C. and Margaretha (Weber) Kraemer. She attended school in Hoskins District and completed the eighth grade. Raised as one of twelve children, she learned from an early age the values of working hard and working together. Life on the farm was not easy, but Emma treasured many memories of her childhood. Her parents and all of her siblings were confirmed members of the Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. On September 23, 1934, she was united in marriage to Edwin Haupt. During the early years of their marriage, they endured the Great Depression. Emma sometimes recalled the struggles of those days, sharing a residence with another young couple and finding work wherever they could in order to make ends meet. When the economy improved, they lived and farmed east of Venturia, ND where their children, Roger, Dennis and Carol, were born and raised. In 1958, they left the farm and moved to Ashley when Edwin was elected to the office of McIntosh County Register of Deeds, a position he held until 1974. As the daughter of an excellent homemaker and mother, Emma learned many skills that served her well. She was a talented seamstress and quilter. She supplemented the family income by sewing and mending for others, and sewed beautiful draperies for many years. She taught several of her grandchildren to sew, crochet, and embroider, and each was the recipient of her hand-stitched quilts. She was an immaculate housekeeper and took pride in a clean and tidy home and yard. She was a great cook and an accomplished flower and vegetable gardener, who canned, pickled and preserved the fruits of her labors to be enjoyed through the long winters. She was famous for her pickled yellow beans. In June of 2001, Edwin and Emma moved to the Ashley Nursing Home. After 67 years of marriage, Edwin died on February 25, 2002 at the age of 88. Emma continued to live at the nursing home where she enjoyed the company of the residents and staff. She was a woman of faith and strength who endured the loss of eyesight, hearing, many friends, and treasured loved ones with grace and acceptance. She was blessed with the gift of a wonderful memory until the time of her death and she cherished visits from family and friends, who will miss her greatly. Emma is survived by: Her son: Dennis (Judy) Haupt, Ashley, ND, Her daughter: Carol Arnold (Paul Trautman), Jamestown, ND, Six grandchildren, Ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by: Her parents: John and Margaretha, Her son and daughter-in-law: Roger and Jean Haupt, Her son-in-law: Roman Arnold, Three great-grandchildren, One great-great-grandchild, Her sisters and brothers: Louisa, Lydia, Max, Edwina, Loradina, Johanna, Alvina, Anna, Otto, Andrew, and an unnamed infant who was stillborn. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
