EMMA OWENS FUNERAL HELD AT BAPTIST CHURCH Services for Mrs. Emma Owens, a long-time resident of this community, were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Holyoke Baptist church, with Rev. Alvah C. Lynch in charge. Interment was in Holyoke Memorial Park. Mrs. Owens passed away Tuesday afternoon, September 11, at the Phillips County Hospital. She had been in failing health for some time and was a patient at the hospital for several weeks. She was 65 years of age. As Emma Mae Jonas, fifth child of Joel and Nancy Jonas, Mrs. Owens was born January 19, 1891 at Naponee, Nebraska. In that community she spent her childhood and youth. On March 7, 1909 she was united in marriage to Roy Earl Owens in a home wedding. Soon after their marriage, they moved to Phillips County, Kansas, where they resided for one year, then they came to Phillips County, Colorado and established their home. Mr. Owens engaged in farming in the Amitie district for a number of years. He was active in community and political affairs and served as state representative for six terms. On trips to Denver Mrs. Owens always accompanied him. To Mr. and Mrs. Owens were born six children, two sons, Clarence LeRoy, who passed away on August 4, 1944 and Richard Allen who lost his life in the service of his country at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941, and four daughters, Alta Pearl (Mrs. Harm Korte), Hancock, Wisconsin, Rosie Opal (Mrs. Gordon Speicher), Loveland, and Julia Margaret Mae (Mrs. Carroll Stanley), and Mary Ellen (Mrs. John Jung), both of Holyoke. Mr. Owens passed away March 12, 1949 and a short time later Mrs. Owens moved to Holyoke where she had made her home since that time. Mrs. Owens became a Christian on December 31, 1947, and was baptized in August 1948. Some time later she became a member of the Holyoke Baptist church and remained a faithful member until her death. She was active in several clubs and in work of the church. Surviving Mrs. Owens besides the children mentioned are two brothers, three sisters, 11 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
