Myers, one of the oldest residents of La Porte City, died Monday evening, July 28, in her home on East Main street where she had lived for more than fifty years. The body was taken to the Ashley and Waldroff mortuary where it was prepared for burial and was returned to the home Tuesday evening. Funeral services were held in the residence Wednesday afternoon at five o’clock and was conducted by Rev. Ben L. Tallman of the Presbyterian church, pastor of the deceased. Two of Mrs. Myers favorite hymns, Beautiful Isle of Somewhere and Good Night and Good Morning, were sung by Mrs. F.E. Lehman and Mrs. H.D. Kline, accompanied. The casket attendants were Cliff O’Reilly, J.W. Kober, H.D. Kline, H.G. Esher, N.H. Blanchaine and Nelson Osborn. Interment was made in West View cemetery. Emma Malvina Oren, daughter of Dr. Jesse Oren and Mary Ann Pembroke Perry was born in La Porte City, Ia., Sept. 23, 1858, and grew to womanhood in this vicinity. She was twice married, first to James A. Smalley of Mount Auburn by whom she was the mother of two children: Royal Jesse Smalley, who after a brilliant career as a student, entered the ministry of the Presbyterian denomination but died April 21, 1910; and Viola Edith Smalley, who married K.D. Miller and lives in Fort Dodge, Ia. The second marriage was to Marion Myers, who died in 1905. Mrs. Myers was a member of the local Presbyterian church and of Lyra Chapter No. 129, Order of Eastern Star. While her interest in life centered in her home and her family, she gave valuable assistance to these organizations. She loved to entertain guests in her home and local friends have enjoyed her hospitality many times. During her last illness, which was four weeks, Mr. and Mrs. Miller and their daughter came here and cared for her. Mrs. Myers is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Miller; her granddaughter, V. Virginia Miller; two sisters, Mrs. M.I.O. Hinsky of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Mrs. C.C. McCoy of Pasadena, Calif., and many nephews and nieces. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Oren and Mrs. George Gilmore, all of Canton, Ill., a nephew and nieces of Mrs. Myers were present at the funeral.
