JAMES GILBERT DIED SUDDENLY AT SCOTT POLLOCK HOME - INTENSE SUFFERER FROM ASTHMA FOR MANY YEARS - CONTRACTED FLU Mrs. James Gilbert died very suddenly Tuesday night (April 8, 1930) at the home of her sister, Mrs. Scott Pollock, with whom she had been making her home for several months. Mrs. Gilbert has been a severe sufferer from asthma for many years and several months ago contracted influenza which added greatly to her ailments. It was not until the past Sunday that her condition, however, appeared to become worse. Tuesday evening, her husband retired for a few moments rest, while Mrs. Pollock remained near her bedside. She heard her breathing heavily and in a few moments she became quiet. Upon investigation, it was found that she had passed away practically without a struggle. Emma Marie Badker was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Frederick Badker (Ida Marie Francis Price), born northwest of Dumont, Iowa, and later came to Hancock County with her parents, who for a number of years resided on a farm east of Garner and later moved to town. About ten years ago, she was united in marriage to James Gilbert, who survives, together with three stepchildren; her aged mother and two brothers: Will Badker of Mason City, Iowa and Frank Badker of Ortonville, Minnesota; sisters: (Ida) Mrs. Grant Ostrander of Thompson, Iowa; (Augusta) Mrs. Dr. Russ of Blue Earth, Minnesota; with whom the mother has been making her home; (Cora Martha) Mrs. Scott Pollock, Garner; and Mrs. Ione Edgren of Chicago. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Pollock home. The Reverand David J Lewis officiated. Music was furnished by a male quartet consisting of Orville Johnson, D J Lewis, Paul Knapp and Hal Pollock. Burial at the Concord Cemetery, Garner, IA. Says she grew up on a farm east of Klemme, IA. She and James lived at Algona up to the last eight years when they temporarily stored their household goods and spent the winter with relatives at Thompson, Blue Earth and Garner. Emma had suffered from asthma for years but had felt better the past winter. Besides her husband, she was survived by his children (her stepchildren): stepdaughter Eva A (nurse and supervisor of the psychopathic hospital in Iowa City, IA); 2 stepsons, Dean and Ray, her mother and siblings. Note: According to Deborah Horzen (on June 25, 2000 - a granddaughter of Dean Gilbert, Emma's stepson): Emma was James Gilbert's second wife. His first wife and he had 4 children. The first wife died during the 1918 influenza epidemic soon after giving birth. Deb was told that Emma and James divorced but the obit doesn't give reference to such. Emma is buried next to James on the Gilbert plot, near the caretaker's shack. Emma's niece, Polly, recalls that Emma rarely lived with James but she did often live with Polly's parents. Her marriage was always troubled. She was close to Augusta and Cora, her sisters. Her nickname was "Dorsey". She babysat for Polly and was also a hat designer, creating beautiful hats for many women. This census says birth year is 1883: H F Boatker 58, Ida Boatker 51, Willie Boatker 21, Frank Boatker 19, Emma Boatker 16, Cora Boatker 14, Iona Boatker 7. Found in the 1910 census at Concord, Hancock, IA. Occupation is a dressmaker: Henry F Bodker 67, Ida Bodker 61, Anna Bodker 27 (should be Emma), Cora Bodker 24, Ione Bodker 17. Found in the 1925 census at Algona, Kossuth, IA: James H Gilbert 41, Emma E Gilbert 41, Eva M Gilbert 18, Daara Gilbert 15, Raymond C Gilbert 12, Oda M Bodker 76 (should be Ida, Emma's mother). Emma died April 8, 1930 at Garner, Hancock, Iowa and is buried at the Concord Cemetery. She never had children, only step-children.
