St. Joseph Cemetery under direction of the Walter Funeral Home of Anthon. Emma O'Connell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Eisenmenger, was born September 6, 1874, at Champaign, Illinois. She was one of ten children. When she was one year old, she moved with her parents to Peoria, Illinois, and in 1880 the family moved to Carson City, Iowa. In 1881 the family moved to a farm two miles west of Oto. While her father was building a two-room house from lumber sawed from trees hauled from the Missouri bottom west of Sloan, her mother and the children stayed at a hotel in Smithland. She taught school for a number of years. She was married to Jeffrey O'Connell, Sr., on October 7, 1895, at Danbury. They farmed in the Oto community until 1902 when they moved to a farm near Anthon. Mr. O'Connell died in 1947. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Anthon, and was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Legion Auxiliary at Anthon. She had been a resident of the Anthon community for 62 years and of Woodbury County for 83 years. She had been hospitalized in Sioux City for the past three years. Survivors include four sons, William O'Connell of Berkeley, California; Jeff and Joe O'Connell of Anthon; and Paul O'Connell of Oto; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Thayer of Anthon and Miss Clara Eisenmenger of Cherokee; three brothers, Paul Eisenmenger of Cherokee, Andy Eisenmenger of Graceville, Minnesota; and Jake Eisenmenger of Milbank, South Dakota; ten grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents, her husband, two sisters and two brothers.
