Description	:	Emma McCarthy was born November 8, 1865, on her father's farm near the I. A. C. (now Iowa State University), where she grew to womanhood. Her early education was obtained in the public schools of Ames, Iowa. She did not complete the course in the Ames schools but enrolled at the I. A. C. in 1881, remaining here only one year and a half when she gave up her college work to enter the list of Story County school teachers. She next accepted a position with the U. S. Postal Service in Ames under Postmaster Duncan, where... Read More	Emma McCarthy was born November 8, 1865, on her father's farm near the I. A. C. (now Iowa State University), where she grew to womanhood. Her early education was obtained in the public schools of Ames, Iowa. She did not complete the course in the Ames schools but enrolled at the I. A. C. in 1881, remaining here only one year and a half when she gave up her college work to enter the list of Story County school teachers. She next accepted a position with the U. S. Postal Service in Ames under Postmaster Duncan, where she remained for two years. In 1892 McCarthy resigned her position in the post office to return to the I. A. C. and assist Miss Thomas with the library work and remained there as an assistant librarian until her marriage to C. G. Lee on September 23, 1896. She was a charter member and president of the Ames Woman's Club. Upon her death, her husband Judge C. G. Lee Judge Lee donated land for the Emma McCarthy Lee Park. The plaque on stone in Emma McCarthy Lee Park in west Ames reads: "EMMA McCARTHY LEE MEMORIAL PARK/PRESENTED TO THE CITY OF AMES/DECEMBER 5, 1949/BY JUDGE C. G. LEE/IN MEMORY OF HIS WIFE/EMMA McCARTHY LEE/WITH A STIPULATION THAT SEVERAL ACRES BE SET ASIDE FOR A PLANT AND TREE PRESERVE AS IT EXISTED IN PIONEER DAYS."
