Special - A messenger just in from a Bohemian settlement twenty miles west of Park River, Walsh county, reports that the wife and four children of Jacob Payer were found dead, having been poisoned. Read More	The following article was taken from the Princeton Union, Princeton, Minnesota, December 30, 1897, page 3: A Mother's Crime Kills Her Four Little Children and Herself Grand Forks, N. D. Special - A messenger just in from a Bohemian settlement twenty miles west of Park River, Walsh county, reports that the wife and four children of Jacob Payer were found dead, having been poisoned. Mr. Payer went to Park River with a load of wheat. Before leaving home he quarreled with his wife. She wanted him to return the same day and he refused to do so. The bodies were discovered by Payer's father, who lived on an adjoining farm and who had been requested to attend to the chores for him while Payer was away. Appearances indicate that Mrs. Payer had administered strychnine in fatal doses to each of their four children, aged seven, five, three and one years, and after their deaths had prepared their bodies for burial, and then, taking a quantity of the same poison, lay down beside the children and died. Strychnine was found in the room. Mrs. Payer had on several occasions threatened to take her own and her children's lives. The family are Bohemians and in good circumstances. A coroner's jury was impaneled and an inquest held, returning a verdict in accordance with the above facts.
