Read More	Emma Susan Smith was born to Joseph Henderson Haughawout and Emma Steininger Haughawout on July 9, 182, nine years after her family moved from Pennsylvania to Fairmont. She died Monday, August 11, 1986, at the age of 104. She was the fourth child of six. Emma graduated from the Fairmont High School in June 1901 as a member of the same class as her future husband. Shortly after graduation, she accompanied Mrs. Ashley to Utah. Mrs. Ashley's husband, a Presbyterian minister, had died, and she was going to Springville, Utah. to live with a daughter, whos husband, Haddington Carter, was principal of Hungerford Academy. Emma first helped Mrs. Ashley and later helped at the academy. Emma later attended Lincoln Business College for one year and worked for Harley Drug Company in Lincoln from the spring of 19903 until 1912. She learned to paint and glaze chinaware at a night school and continued this trade until her marriage in 1914. In 1909 Emma traveled to Seattle on vacation to visit her brothers, Lefferd and Linten, and to attend the Worlds Fair in Seattle. She returned to Fairmont in May of 1912 to take care of her ailing mother. Her parents lived on an acreage south of town (on the main road to Geneva.) Her mother died on September 4, 1912. After her mother's death, she and her father moved to a bungalow house he had just built in Fairmont. She continued to keep house for her father until she married. On June 17, 1914, at the Haughawout bungalow in Fairmont, she married Harry Wilfred Smith. Following their marriage, the couple moved to live on a farm in West Blue Township (Yankee Acres). The original land was purchased in the late 1870's by William Edwin Smith, from a man who had homesteaded the land. It was on this farm that they reared two children, Dale W. Smith (born April 13, 1915) and Margaret Phoebe Smith Nichols (born April 12, 1917). Emma and Harry retired from the farm in December of 1960 and sold the farm. They moved to a house in Fairmont. In November of 1973, Emma and Harry moved to Fairview Manor where Harry Passed away on October 30, 1976. Emma continued to make this her home until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents; by her four brothers, George Linton, Lefferd Lease, Joseph Henderson Jr. and John Franklin; her sister, Margaret Elizabeth Haughawout, and her husband, Harry W. Smith. She is survived by her two children, Dale Smith of Sun City Arizona, and Margaret Nichols of Fairfield, Iowa; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. funeral services were conducted at the Fairmont Cemetery on Wednesday, August 13, with the Rev.
