Description	:	Mrs. A. W. Miller, a pioneer resident of Clay county, died at her home in Spencer on Sunday morning at about one o'clock after an illness of some time. Emma Lamar was born in Burkittsville, Frederick county, Maryland, April 9, 1847, and lived in Maryland until her marriage to Albert W. Miller at her home near Boonesboro, Maryland, October 29, 1872. Emma Lamar was born in Burkittsville, Frederick county, Maryland, April 9, 1847, and lived in Maryland until her marriage to Albert W. Miller at her home near Boonesboro, Maryland, October 29, 1872. They came at once to Spencer and this was her homo ever since. Mrs. Miller's father, Captain William Lamar, was a native of the state of Maryland. He was a captain in the Mexican war. Mr. and Mrs. Miller were pioneer residents of this county. Mr. Miller preceeded her to northwest Iowa and located in Sioux City, and from there to Peterson, and then he came to Spencer and engaged in the milling business with Mr. Marcellus, and closing his intereset in 1873. Mr Miller then opened the first bank in Spencer and the county. He continued as the president of this bank until he sold it out and started the First National Bank as president until his death December 18, 1892. In all his struggles he was ably helped by the assistance of this splendid woman. At the time of the death of her husband she was left with five children, all of them being small, and a large estate to look after Mrs. Miller met the ordeal with courage and fidelity, and raised the children and gave them all a good education. During later years she has had the assistance of her son Albert. They have grown the estate to one of the largest in the county. Mr & Mrs Miller were the parents of eight children, five of whom are living, Eddie M. Miller who died Feb. 27, 1882, Laura May Gilbraith of Minneapolis, Albert W of Spencer, Jennie Benton Lysbeth of Alexandria, Egypt, Hattie & Mattie who died Dec. 22, 1883, Emma Katherlne & Bessie Grace Miller of Spencer. She leaves in addition to her children, three brothers and one sister to mourn her loss, Thomas J. Lamar and Marene Lamar of Hagerstown, Maryland, William H. Lamar and Eliza E. Lamar of Spencer.
