She was born in Gloucester County, Va., on Nov. 27, 1915, to Morgan Philip and Sue Elizabeth Oliver, and had resided in Hampton for many years. Mrs. Darnell was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved husband of 42 years, John James Darnell Sr. One of 12 children, she was also preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters. Mrs. Darnell was a devout Christian, and loved serving the Lord.... Mrs. Darnell was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved husband of 42 years, John James Darnell Sr. One of 12 children, she was also preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters. Mrs. Darnell was a devout Christian, and loved serving the Lord. She had been a member of Wythe Parkway Baptist Church, and Fox Hill Road Baptist Church where she was active in teaching and in the Helping Hands Ministry. In recent years she resided at Beaufont Towers Retirement Community in Richmond. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Joan D. Cowley (John) and Peggy D. Stickle (Joe), and Rebecca D. Richerson (Stephen), and one son, John James Darnell Jr. (Helen); 12 grandchildren, Karen C. Newman, John David Cowley III, Mark A. Cowley, George D. Cowley, Joseph W. Stickle Jr., Melissa S. Smith, Charles Thomas Stickle, John E. Darnell, Beth D. Brooks, Mary R. Mann, Susan V. Richerson, and James S. Richerson; 23 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, where a funeral service will be conducted at noon on Saturday, Feb. 21. Burial will follow at the Peninsula Memorial Park. Memorial gifts may be made to Fox Hill Road Baptist Church Building Fund, 334 Fox Hill Rd., Hampton, VA 23669.
